BMW’s integration of Alpina into its core operations is beginning to shape the future of the storied performance-luxury brand, with new signs pointing to an expansion of its lineup. A recent trademark filing suggests that an Alpina-developed version of the BMW X6 could be under consideration, potentially marking a new direction for the sub-brand.
Documents filed with the World Intellectual Property Organization in March show BMW has registered the name “XB6.” The designation aligns with Alpina’s traditional naming convention, where the “B” denotes a gasoline-powered model. While the filing does not confirm production plans, it has fueled speculation that Alpina may be preparing to introduce a high-end variant of the X6.
Such a move would be notable, as Alpina has never officially produced a version of BMW’s coupe-style X6. However, the brand does have experience in this segment. Its earlier collaboration on the BMW X4 resulted in the Alpina XD4, a diesel-powered model sold خارج the United States. Unlike BMW’s M performance models, the XD4 emphasized long-distance comfort and refinement rather than outright sportiness.
A potential XB6 would likely follow a similar formula. Alpina has traditionally carved out a distinct role within BMW’s portfolio by focusing on luxury, smooth power delivery and grand touring capability, offering a more understated alternative to the sharper, track-focused M division. Now operating fully under BMW, Alpina’s positioning could become even more clearly defined.
Recent Alpina models offer clues about what such a vehicle might deliver. The Alpina XB7 Manufaktur, based on the BMW X7, features a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 engine producing approximately 631 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque. Given the shared architecture between the X6 and X7, a future XB6 could adopt a similar powertrain alongside Alpina-specific chassis tuning and bespoke interior upgrades.
Timing for any potential launch remains unclear. BMW is expected to introduce the next-generation X5 later this year, with the updated X6 likely to follow. If approved, an Alpina XB6 would likely arrive after these standard models, signaling the next phase of Alpina’s evolution under BMW ownership.
