Climbers Warned About Serac Collapse in Khumbu Icefall During Everest Spring Summit Attempt

At Everest Base Camp, approximately 900 climbers and guides are preparing to attempt the summit during the short spring weather window. Before reaching nearly 29,000 feet, they must navigate the Khumbu Icefall, a shifting maze of towering ice blocks, deep crevasses, and unstable glaciers known as one of the world’s most dangerous climbing areas.

This season, the risks are especially high. A massive, unstable serac — a hanging block of glacier ice — cracked above the climbing route, stalling progress for weeks. Elite “Icefall Doctors,” who establish the annual path through the Icefall, were delayed until April 29 due to the danger. When the route finally opened, they warned that the serac could collapse “at any time.”

The only trail forward now passes directly beneath the hanging ice. Lukas Furtenbach, a renowned mountain guide, emphasized the seriousness of the threat. “Anyone who says they’re not concerned is either inexperienced or not paying attention,” he said. “The serac is a real, objective hazard.”

Climate and weather conditions play a critical role in the Icefall’s risks. Temperatures fluctuate rapidly on Everest, making timing crucial. Ang Tshering Sherpa of Asian Trekking explained, “If you go in the morning, it might be safer because the ice is frozen, but in the afternoon it becomes dangerous as the weather warms and ice melts.”

The danger is not theoretical. In 2014, a collapsing serac in the same area triggered a deadly avalanche that killed 16 Nepali guides and workers, marking one of Everest’s worst climbing disasters.

Guides and expedition leaders are monitoring conditions closely, urging climbers to follow safety protocols while navigating the treacherous Icefall. The situation underscores the unpredictable and extreme hazards that mountaineers face on th
