The Cheung Chau Climbing Carnival is set for 10th May, running from noon to 6 pm at the football pitch of Pak Tai Temple Playground. The event offers visitors a preview of the island’s renowned Bun Festival celebrations.
Open to the public, the carnival invites anyone at least one metre tall to register on site for the chance to climb a 14‑metre bun tower — the same structure used in the Bun Scrambling Competition. Participants will experience the thrill of scaling the towering bamboo structure under professional supervision.
Qualified instructors from the Hong Kong, China Mountaineering and Climbing Union will provide guidance on climbing techniques and safety procedures. Organisers said the event aims to promote climbing as a sport while ensuring participants are familiar with proper safety equipment.
Beyond the climbing activity, visitors can make wishes at a specially set-up Wishing Bun Tower and enjoy a variety of family-friendly attractions. These include stage performances, booth games, handicraft workshops, and an exhibition showcasing prize-winning entries from a student drawing competition.
Earlier in the day, from 9 am to noon, the Bun Tower Climbing Team Relay will feature teams representing tertiary institutions, government departments, public utilities, and commercial and industrial organisations competing in a timed challenge. Spectators are encouraged to attend and cheer on the participants.
The Climbing Carnival and Team Relay are key highlights of the 2026 Bun Carnival, jointly organised by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and the Hong Kong Cheung Chau Bun Festival Committee, with support from local district organisations and climbing associations.
