Workhorse Hits 20 Million Miles as U.S. Electric Trucks Market Gains Momentum

While Tesla’s Semi and Cybertruck dominate headlines in the electric truck world, U.S.-based Workhorse has quietly been making significant strides in the medium-duty EV market. The company recently announced that its fleet of electric vans, shuttles, buses, box trucks, and refrigerated vehicles has collectively logged more than 20 million miles, demonstrating the reliability and practicality of its commercial electric vehicles.

A Silent Leader in Medium-Duty EVs

Workhorse first gained attention in 2017 with the introduction of its W-15 electric pickup truck, featuring a range extender. At the time, the company reported receiving around 1,000 preorders from major organizations such as Clean Fuels Ohio, Duke Energy, Portland General Electric, the City of Orlando, and the Southern California Public Power Authority. Since then, Workhorse has steadily produced and deployed electric pickups and medium-duty vehicles from its Union City, Indiana factory, slowly but surely accumulating mileage and customer trust.

“This achievement reinforces the view that medium-duty is the sweet spot for electrification,” said Workhorse CEO Scott Griffith, highlighting the company’s focus on practical, fleet-oriented electric solutions. Among its clients are major fleets like Purolator, Vestis, Cintas, FedEx independent service providers, and others.

Measured Growth Toward Scale-Up

Workhorse has deliberately pursued a cautious expansion strategy, with an initial target of producing 60,000 units annually still on the horizon. Currently, the company operates a fleet of more than 1,100 medium-duty electric vehicles, whose accumulated mileage provides valuable data for scaling production and refining vehicle designs.

“This deep real-world experience enables Workhorse to be a true partner in fleet electrification and guides the development of our seventh-generation platform and expanded vehicle lineup,” the company explained. Workhorse emphasizes total cost of ownership, high uptime, modular vehicle design, fleet-optimized batteries, and depot-based charging as core advantages of its EV offerings.

Next-Generation Platform and Modular Design

Workhorse’s Gen 7 platform represents its latest innovation: a modular, software-defined EV architecture designed to support multiple configurations and future technology upgrades, including autonomous driving features. “Our plan is to move the industry from static hardware assets to always-on, smart nodes within an intelligent network,” Griffith noted.

This approach allows Workhorse to create new vehicle configurations without complicating engineering processes, while continuing to enhance the total cost of ownership compared to traditional gasoline and diesel trucks.

Economic Edge Amid Rising Fuel Prices

While Workhorse aims to eventually bring upfront EV costs on par with internal combustion trucks, total cost of ownership advantages are already compelling. Depot-based charging enables fleets to save on fuel costs and participate in electricity grid management programs, generating additional operational savings. Recent geopolitical tensions affecting energy markets have further highlighted the financial benefits of electric fleets.

Strategic Expansion Through Acquisition

In December, Workhorse completed a merger with California-based Motiv Electric Trucks, expanding its manufacturing capabilities and product lineup. The merger brought a $10 million revolving credit facility and $40 million for supply chain enhancements, helping accelerate production and reduce order-to-delivery times. The combined company now maintains commercial relationships with ten of North America’s largest fleets.

Timing Is Everything

Workhorse’s growth comes at an opportune moment, with rising fuel prices and fleet electrification gaining urgency. Its Union City facility has already ramped production capacity to 5,200 units annually, positioning the company for further expansion.

In contrast, Tesla’s long-anticipated Semi and Cybertruck continue to face delays and limited deployments, while competitors such as Mack Trucks and other established manufacturers advance in both heavy- and medium-duty EV markets. Workhorse’s patient, data-driven approach demonstrates that practical medium-duty electric trucks are ready for mainstream adoption, offering reliability, cost savings, and real-world mileage that headline-grabbing models have yet to match.
