Bray Wheelers has announced a revised route for this year’s Trinity Škoda Shay Elliott Classic and Ken Duff Memorial races, removing the iconic final climb to the finish line. Road resurfacing on the climb has made it unsafe for competition, prompting organizers to adjust the course to a 24 km circuit.
The new start and finish will now be at Avondale GAA Club, just outside Rathdrum. While the removal of the Shay Elliott climb alters the race’s signature character, Bray Wheelers emphasized that the event remains a demanding and competitive challenge for participants.
“Due to ongoing roadworks by Wicklow County Council, we have had to make late adjustments to the traditional route,” the club said. “While disappointing for many riders and supporters, we have worked extensively to ensure the race retains its challenging nature.”
The event continues to be sponsored by Trinity Škoda, whose support helps maintain the race as a key fixture in Ireland’s domestic cycling calendar. This year also marks the inclusion of C3 competitors, with additional prizes for the first three unplaced riders, offering developing cyclists a chance to compete on Wicklow’s demanding terrain.
Prizes include €500, €200, and €100 for the top three finishers, with awards extending to 12th place in each race. Additional cash prizes are available for primes and King of the Mountain (KOM) competitions, sponsored by Velo Revolution.
Despite the route changes, Bray Wheelers promises a memorable day of competitive racing on some of Ireland’s most famous cycling roads. Strong fields are expected, ensuring the event remains a highlight of the season for both riders and spectators.
