Volkswagen Unveils 2027 Atlas With Redesigned Styling, Upgraded Tech and More Power

Volkswagen has revealed the redesigned 2027 Atlas, marking the second generation of its key SUV as the automaker aims to strengthen its position in the North American market.

The three-row Atlas, along with its five-seat Atlas Cross Sport counterpart, has become a cornerstone of Volkswagen’s U.S. lineup, accounting for approximately 30% of the brand’s sales in 2025. Over the past three years, the Atlas family has ranked as Volkswagen’s second-best-selling product line. The new model is set to arrive in dealerships this fall with a gasoline powertrain, while a hybrid variant is expected to follow as part of a mid-cycle update.

The latest Atlas features a slightly longer body and a more refined exterior design. Updates include double-stacked LED headlights, a revised upper grille, illuminated front and rear light bars, and a lighted Volkswagen emblem on most trims. Additional exterior enhancements such as illuminated door handles and projection puddle lamps are available, while the rear design incorporates a larger spoiler and a tailgate that sits flush with the bumper.

Volkswagen has also updated the wheel offerings, introducing new 20- and 21-inch alloy designs across most trims, while the base variant retains 18-inch wheels. Three new exterior colors—Blackberry, Sacramento Green and Sandstone—have been added to the lineup.

Under the hood, the 2027 Atlas receives a performance boost from its turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder TSI engine, now producing 282 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, an increase of 13 horsepower compared with the outgoing model. The updated engine is also expected to improve fuel efficiency. An eight-speed automatic transmission remains standard, with front-wheel drive as default and Volkswagen’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive system available. Maximum towing capacity remains unchanged at 5,000 pounds when properly equipped.

Inside, the cabin has been comprehensively redesigned with upgraded materials and a more premium layout. Changes include a larger center console, revised 12-way ergonomic seats, updated door handles, and the addition of soft-touch surfaces and real wood trim across all variants. Buyers can select from three interior color schemes, including a new deep wine option. Entry-level trims come with leatherette upholstery, while higher trims offer Varenna or Nappa leather, along with optional four-way massage functions for the front seats.

Technology has been significantly enhanced across the lineup. Base models are equipped with a 12.9-inch infotainment display, while higher trims feature a larger 15-inch touchscreen. All variants include a 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro instrument cluster.

The SUV also introduces Volkswagen’s latest Driver Experience Dial, which allows users to adjust volume, drive modes, and customizable “Atmospheres” that integrate ambient lighting and audio settings. Ambient lighting is available in 10 colors on lower trims and up to 30 colors on higher-spec models.

Volkswagen has expanded the Atlas’ standard feature set with a focus on convenience and practicality. Newly standard equipment includes a power liftgate, rear sunshades, an auto-dimming driver-side mirror, dual hatch lights, and front and rear park distance control. The base audio system now features nine speakers, while a 14-speaker Harman Kardon system is available. Additional features include dual wireless charging pads, up to seven USB-C ports, and a one-year subscription to Volkswagen’s AI-powered Premium Speech voice assistant.

Safety has also been improved, with the addition of a front-center airbag, bringing the total to seven. The updated Atlas also benefits from enhancements to Volkswagen’s IQ.DRIVE suite, including upgraded Travel Assist and Emergency Assist systems. Park Distance Control is now standard across all trims, while higher-end models gain the latest Park Assist Plus technology.

Volkswagen said pricing for the 2027 Atlas will be announced closer to its launch later this year.
