Spirit Airlines, America’s largest ultra-low-cost carrier, has announced an immediate shutdown after failing to secure a bailout agreement with the federal government. The closure ends more than three decades of budget-friendly flights, particularly affecting travel to Florida and Orlando, a major market for the airline.
Spirit Aviation Holdings, the airline’s parent company, stated: “It is with great disappointment that on May 2, 2026, Spirit Airlines started an orderly wind-down of our operations, effective immediately. To our Guests: all flights have been cancelled, and customer service is no longer available.
We are proud of the impact of our ultra-low-cost model on the industry over the last 34 years.”
The airline’s website has been transformed into a going-out-of-business portal, replacing its booking platform with a FAQ section for guests and vendors. The site instructs travelers not to go to airports, noting that Spirit cannot assist in rebooking flights on other carriers.
Passengers who booked directly with a credit or debit card will receive automatic refunds to their original form of payment. Those who purchased tickets through travel agents must contact their agents for refunds. Reimbursement for flights booked using vouchers, credits, or Free Spirit points will be determined later through the bankruptcy court process.
Spirit Airlines cannot compensate for incidental costs incurred due to cancellations, though travelers with insurance should check coverage with their providers. Guests currently in transit are advised to make alternative arrangements with other airlines immediately.
The shutdown has broad implications for leisure and business travelers, particularly those visiting Walt Disney World and Orlando International Airport, historically one of Spirit’s busiest hubs. The end of Spirit’s low-cost model may reshape airfare pricing in the U.S., potentially affecting other budget carriers and travel affordability nationwide.
