BMW’s long-standing performance luxury tuner Alpina is entering a new era following its full integration into BMW. With future models now being developed under BMW’s factory structure, attention has turned to what the revived sub-brand could produce next. A newly discovered trademark filing suggests that an Alpina-tuned BMW X6 may be in development, potentially expanding Alpina’s lineup into uncharted territory.
According to a March filing with the World Intellectual Property Organization, BMW has registered the “XB6” name. Based on Alpina’s established naming strategy, the designation strongly points to a high-end version of the BMW X6, with the “B” indicating a gasoline-powered model. While not confirmed as a production vehicle, the filing has sparked speculation about a new addition to Alpina’s portfolio.
Alpina has never officially offered a version of the BMW X6 before, although it has previously worked with other coupe-style SUVs such as the BMW X4. That collaboration produced the Alpina XD4, a diesel-powered model sold outside the United States. The XD4 was positioned as a refined long-distance cruiser rather than a track-focused performance SUV, helping avoid overlap with BMW’s own X4 M.
The potential XB6 would represent a similar philosophy, focusing on comfort, luxury, and effortless performance rather than extreme sporting capability. Alpina has traditionally occupied this niche within the BMW lineup, complementing BMW M’s more aggressive, track-oriented vehicles. With Alpina now officially part of BMW, its role could become even more clearly defined in future product planning.
Recent developments also provide clues about what an XB6 might offer. The Alpina XB7 Manufaktur, based on the BMW X7, features a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 producing around 631 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque. Given the close relationship between the X6 and X7 platforms, a potential XB6 could adopt a similar powertrain along with Alpina’s signature focus on refined driving dynamics and premium interior craftsmanship.
While timing remains uncertain, BMW’s next-generation X5 is expected to launch later this year, with the X6 likely to follow. Should an Alpina XB6 be approved for production, it would likely arrive after the standard models have been established in the market, marking another step in Alpina’s evolution under BMW ownership.
