Drivers seeking newer used cars are in a strong position, as prices for three- and four-year-old models have dropped significantly compared with a year ago. This trend gives buyers the chance to access modern safety features, updated interiors, and low-mileage vehicles without paying the premium of a brand-new car.
Data from AA Cars, shared exclusively with Sun Motors, shows the Peugeot 3008 SUV experienced the sharpest year-on-year decline among three-year-old models. Its average price fell 19.4%, from £18,603 at the start of 2025 to £14,989 in 2026, saving buyers £3,613.
Following closely were Ford models, with the Kuga down 18.9% (£19,702 to £15,980) and the Ranger down 18.8% (£22,434 to £18,209). Other notable three-year-old cars with double-digit price drops include the Kia Niro (15.2%), Hyundai Tucson (14.9%), Volvo XC40 (14.7%), and Ford Focus (14.4%). Popular SUVs such as the Range Rover Evoque, Kia Sportage, and Vauxhall Mokka also saw substantial reductions.
Among four-year-old vehicles, the Toyota Prius led the way with an overall price drop of 28.1%, from £15,685 to £11,280, a £4,405 difference. Other models with notable declines include the Hyundai Tucson (15.3%), Ford Ranger (15.0%), and Ford Kuga (14.0%). The Land Rover Discovery Sport also recorded a 12.7% decrease, saving buyers roughly £3,000. Mainstream models like the Vauxhall Corsa, Nissan Juke, and MG ZS have also become more affordable.
James Hosking, Managing Director of AA Cars, highlighted the benefits for buyers: “The used car market is offering genuinely standout value, particularly among three-year-old models, where returning finance and lease vehicles are boosting supply. Pricing has become more competitive, giving buyers stronger negotiating power than we have seen for some time.”
Hosking added that reductions are not limited to specific segments. “We are seeing meaningful falls across family favourites, from practical SUVs and crossovers to well-known hatchbacks. Buyers should still compare vehicles carefully, paying attention to mileage, specifications, and service history. For hybrid or electric options, now is a sensible time to explore the growing used market.”
Experts advise motorists to consider AA Inspected dealers, where vehicles undergo an independent 128-point inspection. Independent AA Vehicle Inspections are also available from £99 for added reassurance, ensuring transparency and confidence when purchasing a used car.
