NAIROBI – A grassroots initiative is working to improve the quality of life for breast cancer survivors in Africa. The organization, Afya For Africa, is addressing a major challenge many women face after surgery: access to essential post-mastectomy items.
Lameck Oyoo, Director of Afya For Africa, explained the critical need for these supplies. He stated that items like prosthetic breast forms and specialized bras are often a major challenge for survivors. This lack affects their physical comfort, self-confidence, and overall well-being.
“Post-mastectomy items remain a major challenge for many women living with breast cancer,” Oyoo said. “This affects their comfort, confidence, and quality of life.”
To bridge this gap, Afya For Africa has partnered with Dianne’s Mastectomy since 2019. Together, they distribute essential support items to survivors. These include soft breast forms, wigs, post-mastectomy bras, compression sleeves, and even swimming costumes.
These items do more than provide physical comfort. Oyoo emphasized that they help restore a woman’s dignity. They also promote both physical and emotional recovery.
The organization’s work extends beyond this distribution program. Afya For Africa plays a vital role in comprehensive cancer management. Their efforts include creating public awareness about cancer. They also offer patient navigation services and support treatment access. The group runs survivorship programs to provide long-term support.
“We empower patients and caregivers,” Oyoo added. This is done through psychosocial support, education, and advocacy. A key part of their mission is to reduce the stigma often associated with a cancer diagnosis.
The initiative takes a holistic approach. It ensures that women affected by breast cancer receive more than just medical treatment. They also get the practical tools and emotional encouragement they need. This support helps them rebuild their lives with strength and hope.
