Giro d’Italia Brings World-Class Cycling to Naples and Aviano U.S. Military Communities

by Shreeya

Americans stationed in Naples and Aviano will have the opportunity to witness some of the world’s top cyclists this month as the Giro d’Italia passes through their communities.

Widely recognized alongside the Tour de France and Vuelta a España as one of cycling’s three grand tours, the race begins Friday in Bulgaria.

The sixth stage concludes in Naples on May 14, covering an 85-mile route that includes one major climb. Later in the race, the second-to-last stage passes near Aviano on May 30. Stage 20, starting at Gemona del Friuli and finishing in the mountain hamlet of Piancavallo, spans 120 miles and features multiple challenging climbs.

Traffic along the Mountain Highway will be restricted during the race. Roads typically close about two hours before the cyclists arrive and reopen roughly an hour after they pass. Spectators wishing to watch the finish in Piancavallo must obtain one of 780 vehicle passes issued through the Friuli-Venezia Giulia regional website or use shuttle buses from four designated parking areas. Shuttle service operates from 6 a.m. for approximately four hours. Additional viewing points are available along the race route.

Denmark’s Jonas Vingegaard is the most notable rider this year, seeking victory in the only one of cycling’s grand tours he has yet to win. His main rival, Slovenia’s Tadej Pogacar, is not competing.

Four Americans are among the competitors. Sepp Kuss, ranked fourth among U.S. riders by ProCyclingStats, is currently 98th on the points list and rides for Team Visma/Lease a Bike alongside Vingegaard. Magnus Sheffield, the fifth-ranked American, competes with Netcompany/Ineos, while Larry Warbasse (10th among Americans) and William Barta ride for Tudor Pro. Andrew Hampsten, the 1988 champion, remains the only American to win the Giro.

The event offers U.S. military personnel a chance to see elite cycling on their doorstep, combining world-class competition with local community engagement along the scenic Italian coastline and mountains.
