The used car market is experiencing strong momentum in April, with certain models selling significantly faster than the market average. The electric MG4 has emerged as the fastest-selling vehicle on the Auto Trader platform, taking just 14 days to find a buyer—nearly half the average market selling time of 27 days.
Close contenders include the Hyundai i10 and MG HS, both averaging 15 days to sell, underscoring continued demand for affordable, practical vehicles with low running costs in today’s cost-conscious environment.
Market data points to particularly intense competition for vehicles aged three to five years. Half of the ten fastest-selling models fall within this bracket, indicating that buyers are seeking relatively modern used cars that offer a balance of depreciation savings, reliability, and up-to-date features. Vehicles aged five to ten years also remain in steady demand, highlighting the ongoing importance of mid-age stock for sellers.
Mainstream volume brands dominate buyer preference, particularly among budget-conscious consumers. These vehicles typically sell in around 25 days, slightly faster than premium models, which average 27 days. This difference reflects consumer sensitivity to price, running costs, and long-term value.
In contrast, diesel vehicles are increasingly challenging to sell. Rising fuel prices have dampened demand, especially for older, larger models. For instance, a 10-to-15-year-old Mercedes-Benz C-Class takes an average of 48 days to sell, while a Land Rover Discovery averages 38 days and a BMW X5 around 35 days, illustrating a clear slowdown in this segment.
Industry experts note the market is moving at an accelerated pace, with marked differences between vehicle types. Marc Palmer, head of strategy and insights at Auto Trader, explained that the gap between the fastest-selling and slower-moving cars has narrowed to just a few weeks, reflecting high overall activity.
Palmer also highlighted growing pressure in the three-to-five-year segment, where limited supply is driving competition among buyers. This trend has intensified demand for affordable, economical hatchbacks and well-maintained volume-brand vehicles, which remain the most searched-for models on the platform.
Overall, the data paints a picture of a used car market defined by rapid turnover for practical, mid-range vehicles, while older diesel models face rising resistance. Electric and fuel-efficient petrol cars are increasingly shaping consumer behavior as affordability, fuel economy, and long-term value remain key priorities.
