Volkswagen is making significant strides in both its electric vehicle technology and digital marketing strategies as it seeks to strengthen its position in the global automotive market. The company recently announced two major developments: a joint venture with Rivian to develop advanced electric vehicle (EV) technologies and a new global partnership with Jung von Matt SPREE to lead its social media communications.
The collaboration between Volkswagen Group and American EV startup Rivian, launched under the name RV Tech in late 2024, aims to combine Rivian’s expertise in EV architecture and software with Volkswagen’s manufacturing capabilities. This partnership is expected to drive innovation in both hardware and software integration for future Volkswagen electric models. Prototypes developed through RV Tech have already completed rigorous winter testing, signaling promising progress despite the results remaining confidential.
Volkswagen Group of America CEO Kjell Gruner highlighted the importance of this venture, emphasizing that successful EV development requires seamless cooperation between computing architecture and software systems. Interestingly, the technology developed through this alliance may extend beyond fully electric vehicles to enhance internal combustion engine (ICE) models, including hybrids and plug-in hybrids, potentially improving fuel efficiency across Volkswagen’s lineup.
The first vehicle to showcase the new technology will be the I.D. Every1, set for release in 2027 as a 2028 model. However, Volkswagen has indicated that this model will not be available in the United States due to limited demand for subcompact cars that are not crossovers in that market. Future applications of RV Tech could include upcoming models from Audi and the Scout brand, possibly introducing smaller, affordable off-roaders equipped with advanced EV technologies.
On the marketing front, Volkswagen has appointed Jung von Matt SPREE as its global lead agency for social media communications. This agency will oversee Volkswagen’s presence across major platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, LinkedIn, Threads, and Facebook. Their role includes digital strategy development, managing social media channels at Volkswagen’s global headquarters, community engagement, social campaigns, and content creation.
Sebastian Dreiskämper, Director of Social Media & Communications Steering at Volkswagen, underscored the strategic importance of social media as a key channel for connecting with customers worldwide. He expressed confidence in Jung von Matt SPREE’s expertise and cultural fit with Volkswagen’s brand goals. Franziska Spiess, Managing Director at Jung von Matt SPREE, stated that their objective is to leverage social media to give Volkswagen a distinct profile while deepening its connection with diverse target audiences globally.
Together, these initiatives reflect Volkswagen’s comprehensive approach to innovation—investing in cutting-edge technology collaborations while simultaneously enhancing its digital communication efforts. As Volkswagen continues to expand its EV portfolio and refine its brand image online, these strategies position the company to remain competitive amid rapid changes in automotive technology and consumer engagement.
