Volkswagen Unveils 2027 Atlas SUV with New Design, Upgraded Tech and Improved Performance for North America

Volkswagen has revealed the redesigned 2027 Atlas, marking the arrival of the second generation of its flagship SUV as the automaker aims to strengthen its foothold in the highly competitive North American market.

The three-row Atlas, along with the two-row Atlas Cross Sport, remains a cornerstone of Volkswagen’s U.S. lineup, accounting for around 30% of total brand sales in 2025. Over the past several years, the model family has consistently ranked as Volkswagen’s second-best-selling range. The updated Atlas is set to arrive at dealerships this fall with a gasoline powertrain, while a hybrid variant is expected to follow as part of a future mid-cycle update.

The latest model features a slightly longer body and a more refined exterior design. Styling revisions include new double-stacked LED headlights, a reworked grille, and illuminated light bars at both the front and rear, complemented by a lighted Volkswagen emblem on most trims. Additional available features include illuminated door handles and projection puddle lighting, while the rear has been updated with a larger spoiler and a flush-mounted tailgate for a cleaner look.

Volkswagen has also introduced new wheel options, with most trims offering 20- and 21-inch alloy designs, while entry-level versions retain 18-inch wheels. The color palette has been expanded with three new finishes: Blackberry, Sacramento Green, and Sandstone.

Under the hood, the Atlas receives an updated turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder TSI engine, now producing 282 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. The increase represents a modest boost over the previous model, along with expected gains in fuel efficiency. An eight-speed automatic transmission remains standard, with front-wheel drive as default and optional 4Motion all-wheel drive. Maximum towing capacity continues to be rated at 5,000 pounds when properly equipped.

Inside, the cabin has been extensively redesigned with a focus on improved materials and a more premium feel. Enhancements include a larger center console, updated 12-way ergonomic seats, and the addition of soft-touch surfaces and real wood trim across all variants. Buyers can choose from three interior color schemes, including a newly introduced deep wine option. Leatherette upholstery is standard, while higher trims offer Varenna or Nappa leather, along with available front-seat massage functionality.

Technology upgrades are a major highlight of the new Atlas. A 12.9-inch infotainment display comes standard, with higher trims featuring a larger 15-inch touchscreen. All models are equipped with a 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro instrument cluster.

A newly introduced Driver Experience Dial allows users to control audio volume, driving modes, and customizable “Atmospheres” that combine ambient lighting with audio settings. Ambient lighting is available in up to 30 colors on higher-spec models.

Volkswagen has expanded the list of standard equipment, adding features such as a power liftgate, rear sunshades, an auto-dimming driver-side mirror, dual hatch lights, and front and rear park distance control. The standard audio system now includes nine speakers, with an optional 14-speaker Harman Kardon setup available. Additional conveniences include dual wireless charging pads, up to seven USB-C ports, and a one-year subscription to Volkswagen’s AI-powered Premium Speech voice assistant.

On the safety front, the 2027 Atlas adds a front-center airbag, increasing the total count to seven. The model also benefits from updates to Volkswagen’s IQ.DRIVE suite, including enhanced Travel Assist and Emergency Assist systems. Park Distance Control is now standard across the range, while higher trims gain Park Assist Plus.

Volkswagen said pricing details for the 2027 Atlas will be disclosed closer to its official launch later this year.
