Volkswagen Unveils 2027 Atlas SUV with New Design, More Power and Enhanced Technology

by Shreeya

Volkswagen has introduced the redesigned 2027 Atlas, ushering in the second generation of its flagship SUV as the company looks to reinforce its position in the competitive North American market.

The three-row Atlas and its five-seat Atlas Cross Sport counterpart remain central to Volkswagen’s U.S. strategy, contributing roughly 30% of the brand’s total sales in 2025. Over the past three years, the Atlas lineup has consistently ranked as Volkswagen’s second-best-selling product range. The new model is scheduled to reach dealerships this fall with a gasoline engine, while a hybrid version is expected to be added during a mid-cycle update.

The latest Atlas adopts a slightly longer body and a more refined exterior design. Visual updates include double-stacked LED headlights, a redesigned grille, and illuminated light bars at both the front and rear, along with a lighted Volkswagen badge on most trims. Additional features such as illuminated door handles and projection puddle lamps are available, while the rear has been revised with a larger spoiler and a flush-mounted tailgate.

Volkswagen has also refreshed the wheel lineup, offering new 20- and 21-inch alloy designs on most trims, while entry-level variants continue with 18-inch wheels. Three new exterior colors—Blackberry, Sacramento Green, and Sandstone—expand the available palette.

Performance has been enhanced with an updated turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder TSI engine, now producing 282 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, representing a modest increase over the outgoing model. The engine is also expected to deliver improved fuel efficiency. An eight-speed automatic transmission remains standard, paired with front-wheel drive by default and optional 4Motion all-wheel drive. Maximum towing capacity is unchanged at 5,000 pounds when properly equipped.

Inside, the cabin has undergone a comprehensive redesign, focusing on improved materials and a more upscale layout. Updates include a larger center console, revised 12-way ergonomic seats, and the addition of soft-touch surfaces and real wood trim across all variants. Buyers can choose from three interior color schemes, including a new deep wine option. Standard models feature leatherette upholstery, while higher trims offer Varenna or Nappa leather, along with optional front-seat massage functions.

Technology has been significantly upgraded across the range. A 12.9-inch infotainment display is standard, while higher trims are equipped with a larger 15-inch touchscreen. All models include a 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro instrument cluster.

A new Driver Experience Dial allows drivers to control volume, driving modes, and customizable “Atmospheres” that integrate ambient lighting and audio settings. Ambient lighting is available in up to 30 colors on higher-spec models.

Volkswagen has also expanded the Atlas’ list of standard features, adding a power liftgate, rear sunshades, an auto-dimming driver-side mirror, dual hatch lights, and front and rear park distance control. The base audio system now includes nine speakers, while a 14-speaker Harman Kardon system is offered as an upgrade. Additional amenities include dual wireless charging pads, up to seven USB-C ports, and a one-year subscription to Volkswagen’s AI-powered Premium Speech voice assistant.

Safety improvements include the addition of a front-center airbag, bringing the total to seven. The updated model also benefits from enhancements to Volkswagen’s IQ.DRIVE suite, including upgraded Travel Assist and Emergency Assist systems. Park Distance Control is now standard across all trims, with higher-end variants gaining Park Assist Plus.

Volkswagen said pricing for the 2027 Atlas will be announced closer to its official launch later this year.
