The Audi A8, once one of the most expensive luxury sedans in the German automaker’s lineup, is now available on the used market for less than the price of a new entry-level Nissan Altima, highlighting the steep depreciation often associated with flagship luxury vehicles.
According to current used-car market data, the average price of a 2019 Audi A8 L has dropped to approximately $28,849, slightly below the $28,980 starting price of a new 2026 Nissan Altima SV Special Edition. The comparison underscores how rapidly premium luxury sedans can lose value after leaving the showroom.
When the fourth-generation Audi A8 debuted in the United States for the 2019 model year, it carried a starting price of $83,800 before taxes and destination charges. Adjusted for inflation, that original sticker would equal roughly $107,000 in today’s dollars, meaning the sedan has lost an estimated 73% of its real-world value over seven years.
The A8’s depreciation places it among several luxury full-size sedans that have experienced major price declines in the used market. Comparable 2019 models such as the BMW 7 Series, Mercedes-Benz S-Class, and Lexus LS have all posted significant value losses, though depreciation varies by brand and model.
Despite its lower resale price, the Audi A8 remains positioned far above mainstream sedans in terms of features and performance. The 2019 A8 L came standard with premium leather upholstery, 18-way power heated front seats, a dual-screen infotainment setup, digital instrument cluster, navigation, and a 17-speaker audio system. Higher trims and optional packages added massaging rear seats, heated surfaces throughout the cabin, and upgraded premium sound systems.
Under the hood, the standard A8 L featured a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged mild-hybrid V6 producing 335 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and Audi’s quattro all-wheel-drive system. The luxury sedan could accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in approximately 5.3 seconds, offering significantly more performance than the Altima’s 188-horsepower four-cylinder engine.
However, industry analysts and ownership data suggest that the A8’s attractive used pricing comes with notable long-term costs. Luxury vehicles such as the A8 often carry expensive maintenance and repair bills due to complex electronics, advanced suspension systems, and premium drivetrain components.
RepairPal does not currently rate the 2019 Audi A8’s reliability, but older A8 models have ranked near the bottom of the luxury full-size sedan segment for dependability. Estimated annual repair costs for prior-generation A8 models average around $1,298, compared with approximately $483 for a Nissan Altima. Insurance costs are also significantly higher, with estimates placing annual premiums for the A8 at roughly $4,700.
The pricing gap illustrates the trade-off facing used-car buyers: for the cost of a new mainstream sedan, shoppers can purchase a once-six-figure luxury flagship—but may face substantially higher ownership costs in return.
For buyers willing to accept the maintenance risks, the 2019 Audi A8 offers premium luxury, performance, and prestige at a fraction of its original price. For those prioritizing reliability and lower running costs, newer mass-market alternatives like the Nissan Altima may remain the safer choice.
