General Motors is preparing to revive the Chevrolet Camaro, with production expected to resume in late 2027. The iconic American muscle car, which was discontinued in December 2023, will be built at the Lansing Grand River Assembly plant in Michigan. This facility previously produced the sixth-generation Camaro and currently manufactures Cadillac sedans.
The upcoming Camaro will be based on an updated version of the Alpha II rear-wheel-drive platform, which also underpins the current Cadillac CT4 and CT5 models. This platform supports a range of engines, including four-, six-, and eight-cylinder powertrains, with no plans yet for hybrid or electric versions. Sources suggest that high-performance variants could feature a V8 engine similar to the ones recently developed for GM’s Corvette and other performance vehicles.
In addition to the Camaro, GM is also developing a new Buick sedan that will share this platform. This marks a significant shift for Buick, which has focused exclusively on SUVs in the U.S. market since discontinuing its last passenger car, the Regal, in 2020. The new sedan is expected to offer rear-wheel drive, a configuration Buick has not offered domestically since the 1990s. While details remain scarce, industry insiders speculate that Buick may revive familiar nameplates or introduce an entirely new model to re-enter the sedan segment.
Alongside these two vehicles, Cadillac is preparing to launch the next-generation CT5 sedan, also based on the Alpha platform. Production for both the Camaro and CT5 is scheduled to start in fall 2027, with combined annual output estimated between 60,000 and 75,000 units. The production timeline for the Buick sedan remains unclear but is believed to coincide closely with its siblings.
GM’s investment in this trio of sedans highlights a continued commitment to passenger cars despite the industry’s broader shift toward SUVs and electric vehicles. While many automakers are focusing heavily on electrification, these models are expected to feature traditional internal combustion engines, including powerful V8 options for performance trims.
The return of the Chevrolet Camaro will reignite competition with rivals like Ford’s Mustang, which itself is rumored to be expanding into new body styles such as a sedan. Meanwhile, Buick’s return to sedan production could signal renewed interest in offering diverse vehicle types beyond its current SUV lineup.
As more information becomes available over the coming year, enthusiasts and consumers alike will be eager to see how GM balances heritage and innovation in these new models. The Lansing Grand River plant will once again become a hub for American muscle and luxury sedans when production begins.
