Volkswagen has revealed significant updates to its vehicle lineup, including the launch of the all-new 2027 Atlas SUV and plans to reintroduce the Touareg as an electric luxury SUV. The new Atlas model was unveiled at the New York International Auto Show and will be produced at Volkswagen’s Chattanooga plant in Tennessee. This next-generation Atlas features a bolder design, upgraded technology, and enhanced comfort options aimed at family users.
The 2027 Atlas comes with a redesigned exterior, including modern sheet metal and new front and rear lighting. Inside, the SUV offers premium touches such as real wood trim, ambient lighting, a large 15-inch infotainment screen, and Nappa leather upholstery. Comfort is further boosted with massaging front seats, while family-friendly amenities include a power tailgate, rear sunshades, dual wireless charging pads, and voice control capabilities. Volkswagen has equipped the Atlas with a 2.0-liter EA888 Evo5 turbocharged engine that promises improved power output and better fuel efficiency compared to the previous generation. Production at the Chattanooga plant supports around 4,000 employees, and Atlas models accounted for 30% of Volkswagen’s sales in 2025. The new Atlas is expected to be available for purchase in fall 2026.
In addition to the Atlas update, Volkswagen announced that it will discontinue the gas-powered Touareg SUV after a successful 23-year run that saw over 1.2 million units sold worldwide. The current model will cease production later this year following its removal from the US market after 2017. However, Volkswagen is exploring a comeback for the Touareg as a fully electric luxury SUV under the possible name ID Touareg. This new electric version would maintain its position as a larger SUV in Volkswagen’s lineup but transition away from traditional combustion engines.
Martin Sander, Volkswagen’s sales chief, indicated that while the Touareg does not generate massive sales volumes, it holds an important place for the brand and justifies exploring future opportunities. The ID Touareg would likely arrive after Volkswagen’s ID Golf EV, which is planned for release around 2028. Meanwhile, Volkswagen is expanding its electric vehicle portfolio with smaller models like the ID Polo launching later this year and two new electric SUVs—the ID Cross and ID Tiguan—expected by the end of 2026.
Volkswagen’s shift toward electrification reflects its broader strategy to meet growing consumer demand for electric vehicles while maintaining its presence in key market segments such as SUVs. The introduction of premium features and advanced technology in models like the new Atlas also underscores Volkswagen’s effort to appeal to families seeking comfort and connectivity in their vehicles. As production ramps up at Chattanooga and other facilities worldwide, Volkswagen aims to balance innovation with its established manufacturing strengths.
