Land Rover Teams with Chery to Relaunch Freelander as All-Electric Mid-Size SUV by 2026

Land Rover is set to bring back the Freelander name with a fresh, all-electric mid-size SUV developed in collaboration with Chinese automaker Chery. The new vehicle, previewed by the Concept97, is expected to launch in the second half of 2026 and will mark a significant step in Jaguar Land Rover’s electrification strategy.

Designed jointly by Land Rover’s Gaydon studio and Chery’s team in China, the new Freelander aims to combine classic Land Rover styling cues with modern electric vehicle technology. It features a blocky, rugged design reminiscent of past Land Rover models such as the Defender, highlighted by squared-off lighting and a strong silhouette. The SUV will be built in Changshu, China, and is planned to lead a series of six new models to be introduced over the next five years.

Underneath the Concept97 lies Chery’s advanced T1X platform, which supports 800-volt electrical systems and offers flexibility for various powertrain options including fully electric, plug-in hybrid, and range extender versions. This architecture enables ultra-fast charging capabilities and efficient power delivery. Battery technology is a collaboration with CATL and includes the innovative “Freevoy” range-extender battery that can charge at rates up to 360kW. The battery pack also incorporates advanced safety features such as enhanced cooling systems and underbody protection to improve durability and reduce fire risk.

The new Freelander will seat up to six passengers and measures approximately 5100mm in length with a 3000mm wheelbase. It promises strong off-road abilities, featuring intelligent terrain response systems, adaptive dampers, and three locking differentials that adjust automatically to changing conditions. Additionally, next-generation driver assistance technologies co-developed with Huawei will be included, utilizing dual optical LiDAR sensors for improved safety and autonomous driving capabilities. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8397 chip powers these systems, making Freelander one of the first vehicles to deploy this advanced automotive processor.

While currently confirmed for production in China, where it is expected to replace both the Discovery Sport and Range Rover Evoque models, the Freelander has been engineered to meet European safety standards. This suggests potential plans for wider global release including Europe and Australia. However, official export details remain unannounced. The introduction of this electrified Freelander also positions Land Rover to compete against other electric SUVs such as Toyota’s upcoming battery-powered Land Cruiser.

This revival of the Freelander nameplate highlights Jaguar Land Rover’s commitment to expanding its electric vehicle portfolio and adapting its iconic design heritage for a new era of sustainable mobility. With a rapid rollout planned—introducing a new model approximately every six months—the collaboration between Land Rover and Chery signals an ambitious push into electrified off-road SUVs aimed at global markets.
