Chinese Tech Giant Xiaomi Launches Premium YU7 SUV at Shanghai Fashion Week

Chinese technology and electric vehicle manufacturer Xiaomi has taken a bold step into the luxury electric vehicle (EV) market by sponsoring Maison Margiela’s Fall/Winter 2026 fashion show in Shanghai. This event marked the French fashion house’s first runway presentation outside Paris in its 37-year history, symbolizing a significant cultural moment and highlighting Xiaomi’s ambition to appeal to high-end consumers. The partnership also served as a platform to showcase Xiaomi’s new YU7 SUV model and the flagship Xiaomi 17 Pro Max smartphone.

The fashion show, held at a shipyard on Shanghai’s outskirts during Shanghai Fashion Week, was the debut for Maison Margiela’s creative director Glenn Martens. The event was part of a larger initiative called MaisonMargiela/folders, a 12-day series of exhibitions across four Chinese cities aimed at introducing different facets of the brand’s heritage to Chinese consumers. This included unique interactive elements, such as invitations that featured paint and brushes for guests to personalize phone cases using the brand’s signature overpaint technique.

Xiaomi’s entrance into the luxury EV segment comes amid growing competition among Chinese automakers and global brands alike. The company has seen rapid growth in its electric vehicle sales, delivering approximately 410,000 EVs domestically in 2025 and targeting 550,000 deliveries in 2026. The YU7 GT model, which is yet to be released to customers, already holds an industry record for securing 240,000 orders within just 18 hours when reservations opened last year.

This move positions Xiaomi alongside established luxury automakers such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Porsche, all of whom have long histories of sponsoring major fashion events worldwide. These brands have used fashion weeks as strategic platforms to enhance their luxury image and connect with affluent consumers. By sponsoring Maison Margiela’s Shanghai show, Xiaomi signals its intention to compete in this premium market segment by blending technology, design, and lifestyle appeal.

The company’s EV and artificial intelligence divisions reported their first full-year operating profit of 900 million yuan (approximately $123 million) in 2025 on revenues exceeding 106 billion yuan. Xiaomi’s strategy includes not only expanding its vehicle lineup but also integrating AI capabilities to enhance user experience and vehicle performance.

As luxury electric vehicles become more popular globally, the development of comprehensive charging infrastructure remains a critical factor for consumer adoption. While Xiaomi has focused heavily on product innovation and brand positioning, industry experts emphasize that expanding accessible and fast-charging networks will be essential for supporting the growing number of luxury EVs on the road.

In conclusion, Xiaomi’s sponsorship of a high-profile fashion event and aggressive rollout of premium electric vehicles marks a new chapter for Chinese automakers striving to establish themselves in the global luxury EV market. With strong sales momentum and strategic brand partnerships, Xiaomi aims to attract discerning buyers who seek both cutting-edge technology and sophisticated style.
