Mercedes-Benz has introduced updated versions of its luxury SUVs, the GLE and GLS, showcasing a strong commitment to electrification and innovative powertrain technology. These new models maintain the brand’s signature large, powerful presence while integrating advanced digital features and plug-in hybrid options designed to appeal to modern luxury SUV buyers.
The redesigned GLE and GLE Coupe feature a bold new look with larger grilles and distinctive headlamps marked by the twin Star Light design. At night, buyers can opt for an illuminated Mercedes star on the front grille, enhancing the vehicle’s road presence. The lineup offers a variety of wheel designs, including 20-inch wheels for the standard models and up to 22-inch wheels on the AMG GLE 53e variant. Meanwhile, the flagship GLS SUV receives a more subtle update with a refined grille, illuminated chrome accents, and updated lighting elements that highlight its premium status.
Inside, both SUVs embrace cutting-edge technology with the introduction of the MBUX Superscreen. This digital centerpiece combines three 12.3-inch displays under one glass panel and operates on the new Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS). The system incorporates artificial intelligence to enhance user experience and supports the MB.DRIVE suite of driver assistance features. Additional interior highlights include an augmented reality head-up display, Google-based navigation, Burmester 3D surround sound with Dolby Atmos, and power-adjustable seating options extending to the second and third rows.
Under the hood, Mercedes has expanded its powertrain offerings to include several electrified options. The GLE 350 4MATIC is powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 255 horsepower, while the GLE 450 4MATIC upgrades to a revised inline six-cylinder engine delivering 375 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque. The plug-in hybrid GLE 500e 4MATIC combines a six-cylinder engine with electric power for a total output of 429 horsepower and 502 lb-ft of torque. The performance-focused AMG GLE 53e HYBRID pairs a turbocharged six-cylinder with an electric motor rated at 181 horsepower, producing a combined output of 577 horsepower and accelerating from zero to 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds.
The GLS lineup also sees enhancements in power and comfort. The GLS 450 now generates 375 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque, while the GLS 580 increases output to 530 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque. Advanced suspension systems such as AIRMATIC air suspension come standard, with E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL available on higher trims to balance dynamic driving with luxury ride quality.
Produced in Mercedes’ Tuscaloosa, Alabama plant, these updated SUVs are expected to reach dealerships later in 2026. Mercedes aims to compete aggressively in the luxury SUV segment against rivals like BMW, Porsche, Range Rover, and Cadillac by blending traditional large SUV appeal with modern electrification and software-driven innovations.
