Volkswagen Group Technologies and Rivian have announced the successful completion of winter testing for their joint venture, RV Tech, which is focused on developing software-defined vehicle (SDV) architecture. The testing took place over several months in two locations: Phoenix, Arizona, and Arjeplog, Sweden. This marks a significant milestone for the collaboration as it validates the performance and reliability of the electronics and software systems designed for next-generation electric vehicles.
The winter testing program included rigorous trials under harsh conditions such as snow and ice to ensure the durability and functionality of critical vehicle systems. Engineers from Volkswagen, Audi, Scout, and RV Tech worked closely to test features like all-wheel drive, traction control, and driving performance. The program also assessed over-the-air (OTA) update capabilities, confirming that software can be reliably updated remotely even in extreme weather.
Oliver Blume, CEO of Volkswagen Group, highlighted the importance of this achievement by emphasizing the company’s commitment to innovation and its ambition to become a global leader in automotive technology. He noted that the integration between RV Tech and Volkswagen’s various brands is key to advancing development rapidly and setting new industry standards with future products.
The testing was divided into two phases: initial software finalization in Arizona followed by endurance testing in Sweden’s winter environment. Hundreds of tests were conducted to verify the interaction between hardware components and software functions under dynamic driving conditions. The success of these tests provides a strong foundation for further development stages and supports Volkswagen’s plan to implement this SDV platform across electric vehicle models targeted at markets in the Western Hemisphere.
In addition to technical progress, Volkswagen is investing in building internal software expertise within its brands. Starting in May, Volkswagen Passenger Cars will launch a qualification program where software specialists will train at RV Tech facilities, including the one in Palo Alto. These specialists will then return to Wolfsburg equipped with deeper knowledge to help accelerate integration of brand-specific features into future vehicles. Audi and Porsche are preparing similar training initiatives.
