Acura Expands Global Reach with First Sales in Japanese Market

by Shreeya

Acura is set to enter the Japanese market for the first time by introducing two American-made vehicles later this year. The brand, which has traditionally focused on North American markets, will bring the Integra Type S and the Honda Passport TrailSport Elite to Japanese showrooms starting in the second half of 2026. This expansion follows a trade agreement signed by former U.S. President Donald Trump that opened Japan to more American car imports.

The Integra Type S, manufactured in Ohio, and the Passport TrailSport Elite, built in Alabama, represent a significant step for Acura as it celebrates its 40th anniversary. Acura was originally launched by Honda in 1986 mainly for the U.S. and Canadian markets. The Integra model features a K20C engine produced alongside the vehicle in Ohio, while the Passport includes a 3.5-liter V6 engine assembled in Alabama.

Honda displayed both vehicles at the 2020 Tokyo Auto Salon, signaling early interest in bringing these models to Japanese consumers. The TrailSport Elite trim of the Passport is a premium option with a starting price close to $55,000. Jun Jayaraman, senior vice president of Honda of America’s Manufacturing Management Center, emphasized the company’s confidence in American manufacturing quality and expressed pride in exporting these vehicles back to Japan.

Sales figures show mixed results for these models in the U.S. market: Acura sold just over 20,000 Integras in 2025, reflecting a decline of 17.3 percent from the previous year. On the other hand, Honda sold over 55,000 Passports last year, marking a strong increase of more than 70 percent despite its launch occurring only in early February.

While the trade deal has allowed American automakers like Honda to export cars to Japan more freely, industry experts remain cautious about how much impact this move will have on sales volumes. For now, only two specific trims will be available rather than full model lines. Still, this development could be the beginning of greater market integration between American manufacturers and Japanese consumers.

The introduction of Acura models into Japan reflects both a strategic business decision and an acknowledgment of changing trade dynamics. It also highlights Honda’s commitment to leveraging its manufacturing operations across multiple regions to serve new customer bases. Whether this move will lead to broader acceptance of American-built luxury vehicles in Japan remains to be seen as sales progress throughout 2026.
