Toyota Unveils Aygo X Hybrid Car: Stylish, Efficient, and a City Car Game-Changer

by Shreeya

Toyota, long recognized as a leader in hybrid technology, is now bringing its expertise to the micro-car segment with the updated Aygo X Hybrid. More than 30 years after the original Prius introduced hybrid power to the world, Toyota is applying the technology to its smallest urban car, combining efficiency with practicality and a refreshed design.

Priced from €19,990 in Europe, the Aygo X Hybrid is around 10% more expensive than its petrol-only counterpart. However, the added technology significantly reduces fuel consumption while enhancing driving dynamics. Once considered a basic city runabout, the Aygo X has grown in character, efficiency, and everyday usability.

The hybrid system borrows the 1.5-litre petrol engine from the larger Yaris, paired with an electric motor to produce a combined 116 hp (85 kW), more than 50% higher than the previous model. This enables a 0–100 km/h acceleration in 9.2 seconds and a top speed of 172 km/h, eliminating the sluggishness and drivetrain noise of earlier versions.

A new automatic CVT transmission provides smooth, confident power delivery. In urban traffic, the Aygo X often runs on electric power alone, with the onboard computer frequently showing electric assistance contributing 50% or more. Toyota estimates fuel consumption drops by up to 25%, reaching a maximum of 3.7 litres per 100 km, while CO2 emissions stand at just 85 g/km—making it one of Europe’s cleanest non-plug-in micro-cars.

Toyota has also retuned the chassis and optimized steering, giving the car a tighter, more responsive feel. The GR Sport version adds a sportier edge, while the standard model remains agile and comfortable over city streets, cobblestones, and speed bumps. A roll-back roof further enhances its appeal for city driving.

Modern safety and convenience features include adaptive cruise control, lane guidance, and improved sound insulation. The Aygo X Hybrid also offers three driving modes—Eco, Normal, and Power—with Normal providing a balanced mix of efficiency and responsiveness.

Visually, the car has grown to 3.78 metres in length, with a revised front end, larger overhang, and a refreshed grille and headlights that give it a more sophisticated appearance. Interior space has improved slightly in the front row, though rear seating remains tight, and small, rear-hinged windows limit ventilation. The hybrid battery is cleverly positioned under the rear seat, leaving the 231-litre boot unchanged.

With its blend of affordability, fuel efficiency, and urban practicality, the Aygo X Hybrid occupies a niche increasingly abandoned by other manufacturers. For city drivers not ready to commit to a fully electric car, Toyota’s latest micro-car offers a compelling halfway solution.
