Early detection significantly improves outcomes for almost all cancers. Yet, in Australia, most cancers currently lack a screening program.
Multi-cancer detection (MCD) tests could change that. These tests aim to identify a wide range of cancers in people who show no symptoms. Associate Professor Julia Steinberg from the Daffodil Centre is leading research into how MCD tests could improve cancer outcomes in Australia.
The project spans five years and involves more than 35 researchers across Australia, the UK, France, and Singapore. It is supported by a $3 million grant from the Australian Government’s Medical Research Future Fund.
How MCD Tests Work
MCD tests are simple blood tests designed to detect biomarkers for up to 50 cancer types, ideally before symptoms appear.
“The potential of these tests to improve cancer detection and patient outcomes is enormous,” A/Prof Steinberg said. “Almost half of all cancer deaths in Australia occur in cancers for which there is no screening or early detection program.”
However, widespread public access to MCD tests is still some years away. Current technologies miss more than half of early-stage cancers. False positives can lead to unnecessary anxiety and invasive procedures, while false negatives may result in untreated cancers.
Preparing Australia’s Health System
A/Prof Steinberg is developing a roadmap to ensure Australia’s health system is ready for MCD tests once the technology matures. Her team will monitor existing and emerging MCD technologies to evaluate their potential impact on patient care.
“Our work will create an evidence-based roadmap with recommended steps for evaluating and trialing MCD tests, helping to maximise their potential for patient-friendly early cancer detection,” she said.
The research also involves consulting health professionals and consumers to determine how MCD testing could be integrated into Australia’s healthcare system. This includes planning follow-up pathways and diagnostic procedures after a positive test.
The team will also assess the economic implications of MCD testing.
