Ruai Family Hospital (RFH), in partnership with the RFH Foundation, is offering free brachytherapy treatment to women battling cervical cancer.
In the first phase of the initiative, the hospital will fully subsidize brachytherapy for three eligible patients. This internal radiation therapy targets tumors directly, minimizing exposure to surrounding healthy tissue.
Cost remains a major barrier to accessing brachytherapy in Kenya, despite its proven effectiveness for advanced cervical cancer, the hospital said.
Women interested in the program will undergo clinical evaluations to determine eligibility. The hospital has urged the public to refer potential patients through its cancer centre hotline.
The brachytherapy unit is located in RFH Specialist Hospital’s newly launched oncology facility, part of the hospital’s 11-branch network. “Our commitment is to ensure patients can access advanced cancer care within Africa, without traveling abroad,” said Dr. Okoth.
Cervical cancer continues to be a leading cause of cancer deaths among Kenyan women. Late diagnosis, limited treatment capacity, and high costs are persistent challenges in the country’s cancer response.
While the free brachytherapy program is small in scale, it aligns with wider calls to expand access to cancer treatment and screening nationwide.
