New Ultrasound Method Rivals MRI for Prostate Cancer Biopsies

A recent clinical trial has highlighted a promising new technique for prostate cancer diagnosis that could simplify the biopsy process. Traditionally, confirming and locating prostate cancer involves a two-step approach: first, patients undergo an MRI scan; then, a biopsy is performed guided by the MRI results combined with live ultrasound imaging. This method, while effective, can be time-consuming and costly.

The innovative micro-ultrasound-guided biopsy offers a streamlined alternative. Using a high-resolution ultrasound probe inserted into the rectum, surgeons can directly visualize the prostate in real-time and perform the biopsy in a single step.

In a study involving 678 men suspected of having prostate cancer, half underwent this micro-ultrasound-guided biopsy, while the other half followed the conventional MRI-first procedure.

Results showed no significant difference in diagnostic accuracy between the two methods, suggesting that micro-ultrasound could be a practical, efficient, and less expensive option for guiding prostate biopsies.
