Omoda 4 Targets Europe’s Small SUV Market with Hybrid Power and “Affordable Premium” Strategy

by Shreeya

A new Chinese SUV entrant is intensifying competition in Europe’s small SUV segment, as Omoda prepares to introduce a lower-priced model designed to challenge established rivals and appeal to younger buyers.

The Omoda 4, unveiled at the Beijing Auto Show, is the latest offering from Omoda, a sister brand of Jaecoo under China’s Chery Group. Positioned as a compact SUV, the model is expected to compete directly with vehicles such as the Nissan Juke while undercutting many competitors on price.

Omoda and Jaecoo have already drawn attention in international markets for their design approach, with Jaecoo models informally likened to a “Temu Range Rover” for delivering upscale styling cues at more accessible price points. The comparison highlights how premium SUV design, often associated with brands like Range Rover, is increasingly influencing more affordable segments.

Within Omoda’s lineup, the new model will sit below the Omoda 5, Omoda 7, and Omoda 9, serving as an entry-level option aimed at cost-conscious consumers. The company is targeting buyers seeking modern design and electrified powertrains without the higher price tags typically associated with premium brands.

At launch, the Omoda 4 will be offered as a full hybrid, combining a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor. A fully electric variant, expected to be named the Omoda E4, is also in development as part of the brand’s broader electrification strategy.

Official UK pricing has yet to be announced, but the model is expected to be positioned below the Omoda 5, which starts at £25,915. This would place it toward the lower end of the Nissan Juke’s typical £24,000 to £30,000 price range, reinforcing its role as a value-focused alternative.

Victor Zhang said the company’s strategy is not centered on being the cheapest option in the market. Instead, Omoda aims to deliver “affordable premium” vehicles that combine strong visual appeal with competitive pricing.

As competition intensifies, established premium models such as the Range Rover continue to define the high-end SUV segment. However, emerging brands like Omoda are increasingly targeting mainstream buyers by offering similar design influences at significantly lower costs, signaling a shift in how value and styling are balanced in the European market.
