Used EV Market Gains Momentum in the U.S. as Prices Drop and Supply Surges in 2026

A rising number of American drivers are entering the used electric vehicle (EV) market, encouraged by declining prices, stronger battery performance, and an expanding supply of off-lease vehicles. The shift is underscored in the “Driving Into the Future” series, sponsored by Electric for All, which examines affordable pathways to EV ownership.

For consumers like Julius Lopez of Thousand Oaks, California, the motivation is largely financial. Lopez recently purchased a 2023 Kia Niro EV for $30,000—about one-third below its original $47,000 price tag. With just 5,000 miles on the odometer, he said the vehicle offered strong value while still aligning with his environmental priorities.

Industry analysts say Lopez’s experience reflects a broader market trend. According to Edmunds, current conditions represent one of the most favorable periods in recent years to buy a used EV. A wave of lease returns—particularly from contracts initiated in 2023—is expected to significantly expand inventory, increasing supply and placing downward pressure on prices through 2026.

Edmunds analyst Joseph Yoon noted that this growing stock of off-lease vehicles is creating a distinctly buyer-friendly environment. Consumers are increasingly able to access newer models at reduced prices, often with remaining manufacturer warranties intact. This combination of affordability and reliability is helping to reduce longstanding concerns about used EV purchases.

Battery health, once a major barrier in the pre-owned EV market, has also improved substantially. Advances in battery technology over the past two decades have enhanced durability and lifespan, while many sellers now provide battery health scores to give buyers greater transparency and confidence in their purchase decisions.

Experts recommend that shoppers consider certified pre-owned (CPO) EVs, which typically undergo rigorous inspections and include extended warranty coverage. While federal incentives for used EV purchases may be limited in some cases, buyers are encouraged to explore state and local programs, which can still offer meaningful savings, including support for home charging installation.

However, analysts also caution that older or high-mileage electric vehicles may carry increased risks related to battery degradation and outdated technology. Despite this, models such as the Chevrolet Bolt and Nissan Leaf continue to attract budget-conscious buyers thanks to their low entry prices and suitability for everyday commuting.

For Lopez, buying used has become the preferred approach. After purchasing two pre-owned EVs, he said he sees little justification for paying a premium for new models when nearly identical options are available at significantly lower prices. His perspective aligns with a broader shift in consumer sentiment as more drivers recognize the value emerging in the used EV segment.

As inventory continues to expand and technology improves, industry observers expect demand for pre-owned electric vehicles to strengthen further. What was once seen as a compromise is increasingly viewed as a practical and financially sound entry point into electric mobility.
