UK Used Car Market Rebounds as Supply Surge Drives £52.6 Million in Sales

Improved stock availability and stronger buyer participation fueled a sharp rise in used car trading activity in March, with total retail values reaching £52.6 million on Dealer Auction’s platform. The latest data from the company’s Retail Margin Monitor points to a notable recovery in market performance, supported by increased supply and more balanced demand conditions.

Fresh vehicle listings rose by 20% خلال the month, helping to generate nearly 80,000 bids across the marketplace. This influx of stock contributed to a £10 million increase in total retail value compared with February’s £42 million, underscoring a more active and liquid trading environment. Analysts say the figures reflect a healthier equilibrium between supply and demand, following tighter conditions earlier in the year.

At the model level, March results revealed both consistency among established performers and the arrival of new contenders. The Citroën C3 led the sub-£10,000 retail category for the first time, signaling a shift in dynamics within the lower-priced segment. Meanwhile, familiar high performers such as the Peugeot 3008, Ford Kuga, Nissan Qashqai, and Kia Sportage maintained strong positions.

The Volkswagen Tiguan also stood out, entering the rankings in third place. It was joined by new appearances from the Honda Civic, as well as the return of the Jaguar XF saloon to the sub-£10,000 profit chart after a period of absence. Industry observers note that this broader mix of vehicles highlights increasing diversification in buyer preferences, spanning multiple brands, segments, and fuel types.

Dealer Auction marketplace director Kieran TeeBoon said the March data marks a clear shift from February’s more cautious trading patterns. He explained that the earlier period was characterized by a “flight to safety,” with buyers favoring familiar and reliable models. In contrast, March saw greater openness to a wider range of vehicles.

Competitive pricing and faster inventory turnover also played a key role in boosting activity. TeeBoon noted that improved stock flow and sustained demand have shortened sales cycles and increased engagement across the platform.

One of the clearest indicators of strong demand was the speed of transactions. Vehicles sold through natural auction channels recorded an average “days to sell” of just 2.7 days in March, reflecting robust buyer appetite for well-priced stock.

Among top-performing models, the Nissan Qashqai stood out for its efficiency in reaching retail buyers. It averaged 25 days to sell at the retail level, making it the fastest-moving vehicle among the top 10 profit generators. It also ranked as the third-fastest seller overall, behind the Mazda6 and Mazda3, reinforcing its long-standing popularity in the UK used car market.

Brand-level performance data highlighted clear segmentation in buyer demand. In the sub-£10,000 category, Land Rover led the market, followed by BMW and Mercedes-Benz. For vehicles priced above £10,000, Land Rover again took the top spot, while Jaguar climbed to second place for the first time in over a year, suggesting renewed interest in premium used vehicles.

TeeBoon said the latest figures are particularly encouraging given earlier expectations of tighter supply in the mid-aged vehicle segment. He added that March’s performance signals a strong start for the sector, driven by rising demand and improved stock availability across multiple price points.

Overall, the data points to a more dynamic and diversified used car market, with stronger liquidity, quicker sales cycles, and broader buyer interest across both mainstream and premium segments.
