A new analysis has highlighted which SUVs hold their value best over time, offering buyers a clearer picture of long-term ownership costs in a segment where depreciation can significantly affect overall spending.
SUV purchases are often among the most expensive decisions for car buyers, and resale value plays a key role in determining how much money is ultimately lost after several years of ownership. Models that retain a higher percentage of their original price can substantially reduce the total cost of ownership.
The findings come from a study conducted by Edmunds, which examined transaction data for 2023 model-year SUVs. The analysis compared original manufacturer suggested retail prices with average used-market selling prices to determine how much value different models retained after roughly three years.
Edmunds grouped the results into five size categories and identified the top two performers in each segment. While the data is based on 2023 model-year vehicles, the report notes that the trends remain useful for shoppers evaluating comparable 2026 model-year SUVs.
In the extra-small SUV category, the Toyota Corolla Cross emerged as the strongest performer, retaining about 81.7% of its original value. It was followed closely by the Honda HR-V, with both models praised for practicality and versatility, although the HR-V’s modest acceleration was noted as a drawback.
Among small SUVs, hybrid models dominated the rankings. The Toyota RAV4 Hybrid retained approximately 81.4% of its value, supported by its strong fuel efficiency, comfortable ride quality, and well-rounded feature set. The Honda CR-V also ranked highly, earning recognition for its spacious interior, smooth driving dynamics, and efficient hybrid option.
The midsize SUV segment was led by the Toyota 4Runner, which achieved the highest resale value across the entire study at around 83% after three years. Its body-on-frame construction and strong off-road capability continue to attract consistent demand. The Ford Bronco secured second place, appealing to buyers with its rugged styling, off-road performance, and wide range of customization options.
In the midsize three-row category, the Toyota Highlander Hybrid recorded a residual value of about 77%. While its third-row seating is more limited in space, it remains popular for its comfort, efficiency, and long-standing reputation for reliability. The Honda Pilot followed, offering greater third-row practicality, though it does not currently offer a hybrid variant.
In the large three-row SUV segment, the Toyota Sequoia led the rankings with an estimated 80% value retention after three years. Its hybrid powertrain delivers strong performance and towing capability while supporting strong resale demand. The Chevrolet Tahoe ranked second, backed by powerful engine choices, robust towing capacity, and a wide range of technology features.
Overall, Edmunds noted that depreciation is unavoidable in vehicle ownership, but choosing models with strong residual values can significantly reduce long-term costs. The SUVs highlighted in the study represent some of the most financially resilient options available within their respective segments.
