BMW’s iconic performance luxury tuner Alpina is entering a new chapter following its full integration into BMW’s corporate structure. As future Alpina models are developed in-house, a recently uncovered trademark filing has fueled speculation that a new X6-based flagship SUV could be on the way.
According to a March filing with the World Intellectual Property Organization, BMW has registered the name “XB6.” In line with Alpina’s established naming convention, the designation strongly suggests a high-end variant of the BMW X6, with the “B” typically indicating a gasoline-powered model. While the filing does not confirm a production vehicle, it has prompted widespread industry speculation about a potential expansion of Alpina’s SUV lineup.
Alpina has never previously offered a dedicated version of the BMW X6, though it has worked with similar coupe-style SUVs such as the BMW X4. That collaboration resulted in the Alpina XD4, a diesel-powered model sold in select markets outside the United States. The XD4 emphasized long-distance comfort and refinement over aggressive performance, deliberately positioning itself away from BMW’s own X4 M.
A potential XB6 would likely follow the same philosophy, prioritizing luxury, comfort, and effortless performance rather than track-focused dynamics. Traditionally, Alpina has occupied this space within BMW’s portfolio, serving as a complement to BMW M’s more performance-oriented and sport-tuned models. With Alpina now fully absorbed into BMW, its product role could become even more clearly defined in future planning.
Recent Alpina models also offer clues about what the XB6 might deliver. The Alpina XB7 Manufaktur, based on the BMW X7, is powered by a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 producing approximately 631 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque. Given the close relationship between the X5, X6, and X7 platforms, a potential XB6 could adopt a similar powertrain, paired with Alpina’s signature focus on refined ride quality and premium interior craftsmanship.
Although timing remains uncertain, BMW’s next-generation X5 is expected to debut later this year, with the X6 likely to follow. If an Alpina XB6 receives approval for production, it would likely arrive after the standard models are established in the market, marking another step in Alpina’s evolution under BMW ownership.
