Volkswagen has unveiled the redesigned 2027 Atlas, introducing the second generation of one of its most significant SUV models as the automaker looks to build on the vehicle’s strong sales momentum in North America.
The three-row Atlas and its five-seat Atlas Cross Sport sibling accounted for roughly 30% of Volkswagen’s U.S. sales in 2025, making the Atlas family the brand’s second-best-selling product line over the past three years. The all-new Atlas is scheduled to launch this fall in gasoline-powered form, while a hybrid version is planned for a future mid-cycle update.
The 2027 Atlas arrives with a slightly longer body and a more upscale exterior design. Styling updates include double-stacked LED headlights, a revised masked upper grille, illuminated front and rear light bars, and a lit Volkswagen badge on most trims. Available exterior upgrades include illuminated door handles and puddle lamps with projection lighting, while the rear features a more prominent spoiler and a tailgate integrated flush with the bumper.
Volkswagen has also refreshed the wheel lineup, offering new 20- and 21-inch alloy wheel designs on most trims, while the base model retains 18-inch wheels. Three new exterior colors—Blackberry, Sacramento Green, and Sandstone—join the palette for 2027.
Under the hood, the Atlas receives a modest performance boost from its turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder TSI engine, which now produces 282 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, an increase of 13 horsepower over the outgoing model. Volkswagen said the updated powertrain is also expected to deliver improved fuel economy. An eight-speed automatic transmission remains standard, paired with front-wheel drive, while the company’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive system is available across the lineup. Towing capacity stays at 5,000 pounds when equipped with a factory-installed trailer hitch.
Inside, Volkswagen has overhauled the cabin with a more premium layout and upgraded materials. The redesigned interior includes an expanded center console, revised 12-way ergonomic seats, new door handles, soft-touch surfaces, and real wood trim across all variants. Buyers can choose from three interior color schemes, including a newly introduced deep wine option. Leatherette upholstery remains standard on entry-level trims, while higher trims feature Varenna or Nappa leather and optional four-way massage functions for both front seats.
Technology also sees a major upgrade. Base Atlas models now come with a 12.9-inch infotainment display, while upper trims receive a larger freestanding 15-inch touchscreen. Every model includes Volkswagen’s 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro digital instrument cluster.
The SUV also adopts Volkswagen’s latest Driver Experience Dial, allowing users to control audio volume, drive modes, and customizable “Atmospheres” settings that combine ambient lighting and audio themes. Ambient lighting is offered in 10 colors on base trims and 30 colors on higher trims.
Volkswagen has expanded the Atlas’ standard equipment list with a focus on convenience and family-friendly usability. Newly standard features include a power liftgate, rear sunshades, an auto-dimming driver-side mirror, dual hatch lights, and front and rear park distance control. The base audio system has been upgraded to nine speakers, while a 14-speaker Harman Kardon premium setup is available on upper trims. The SUV also includes dual wireless charging pads, up to seven USB-C ports, and a one-year trial of Volkswagen’s AI-powered Premium Speech voice assistant.
Safety enhancements are another key part of the update. The 2027 Atlas adds a front-center airbag, increasing the total airbag count to seven, and receives updates to Volkswagen’s IQ.DRIVE driver-assistance suite, including improved Travel Assist and Emergency Assist systems. Front and rear Park Distance Control is now standard on all trims, while top-spec models gain the latest Park Assist Plus technology.
Volkswagen said pricing for the 2027 Atlas will be announced closer to the SUV’s market launch this fall.
