Swedish EV Brand Polestar Reports Robust Q1 Sales and Surge in Used Vehicle Market

by Shreeya

Polestar, the Swedish electric performance car brand, has announced a strong start to 2026 with a 7% increase in global retail sales during the first quarter compared to the same period last year. The company sold approximately 13,126 vehicles worldwide from January to March, continuing its upward trend following a record-breaking 2025. This growth is notable given the challenging global market conditions marked by geopolitical uncertainties and evolving consumer preferences.

The brand’s expansion efforts have played a crucial role in driving sales. Polestar has rapidly increased its retail footprint, operating 230 locations worldwide by the end of Q1 2026. This represents a 50% increase from 154 locations at the end of the first quarter in 2025. The company plans to further expand its network to about 250 retail points by the end of this year, aiming to improve customer access and strengthen its presence across key markets.

Strong demand from regions such as Australia, Germany, Sweden, South Korea, and the United Kingdom has supported this growth. In particular, Polestar’s performance in the UK stands out with double-digit sales increases, solidifying its position as one of the fastest-growing premium automotive brands in that market. Consumer interest in electric vehicles continues to rise due to concerns over rising fuel costs and environmental factors, encouraging more buyers to shift away from traditional internal combustion engines.

Another significant development is the surge in demand for pre-owned Polestar electric vehicles. The company reported a remarkable 99% year-over-year increase in used EV sales. This trend highlights a growing consumer confidence in the durability and reliability of electric vehicles. It also reflects an expanding secondary market that provides more affordable options for those interested in owning an electric car but who may not be ready to purchase new models.

Looking ahead, Polestar is preparing to introduce new models that are expected to boost its momentum further. The upcoming Polestar 3 SUV and Polestar 5 sedan are designed to appeal to performance-oriented customers within the premium EV segment. These additions aim to diversify the brand’s lineup and maintain strong growth throughout 2026.

Overall, Polestar’s combination of retail expansion, solid sales performance across multiple regions, and rising interest in used electric vehicles positions the company well for continued success in the competitive EV market. With plans for new model launches and ongoing network growth, Polestar is set to strengthen its foothold as a leading player in the premium electric vehicle industry.
