Range Rover Faces Competition from Chinese Jaecoo SUV Leading UK Sales Charts

by Shreeya

A new Chinese SUV, the Jaecoo 7, is rapidly gaining ground in the UK automotive market and is poised to become one of the best-selling vehicles in 2026. Often referred to as the “Temu Range Rover” due to its striking resemblance to the Range Rover Velar, this model offers a much more affordable alternative to the iconic British luxury SUV. Priced at around £35,000, nearly half the cost of a comparable Range Rover, the Jaecoo 7 appeals to a wider range of buyers seeking style and features at a budget-friendly price.

Since its UK launch in January 2025, Jaecoo has made significant strides in capturing consumer interest. In the first quarter of 2026 alone, the Jaecoo 7 topped new car sales charts twice, with approximately 15,569 units sold across the country. The vehicle comes equipped with modern amenities such as 19-inch alloy wheels, a large 13.2-inch touchscreen supporting wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a panoramic roof, heated front seats, synthetic leather upholstery, and an advanced 540-degree parking camera system.

The success of the Jaecoo 7 has also disrupted established competitors like Ford. In March 2026, it outsold popular models including the Ford Puma and Nissan Qashqai, registering over 10,000 sales compared to Puma’s 9,193 and Qashqai’s 8,718 units. This rapid rise has surprised industry observers given Jaecoo’s relatively recent entry into the market. The availability of multiple powertrain options—including gasoline, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid variants—has contributed significantly to its appeal. Notably, about 85% of sales have been plug-in hybrid models, highlighting strong consumer demand for electrified vehicles in the UK.

Jaecoo is a brand owned by Chinese automotive giant Chery and is now actively expanding its presence across Europe. The CEO of Jaecoo UK, Gary Lan, described the early sales figures as a “landmark moment” that reflects both product strength and growing consumer confidence. This achievement underscores how emerging brands from China are reshaping competitive dynamics in traditionally strong Western markets.

Meanwhile, Ford is undergoing structural changes including relocating its headquarters to improve collaboration among employees. Despite these efforts and a recent increase in share price driven by investor optimism, Ford faces mounting pressure from new entrants like Jaecoo. Analysts remain cautiously optimistic about Ford’s future but acknowledge that competition is intensifying.

The emergence of affordable yet feature-rich vehicles like the Jaecoo 7 presents a challenge for luxury brands such as Range Rover that have long dominated the premium SUV segment. As customers increasingly seek value alongside style and technology, automakers must adapt quickly to maintain their market positions. The ongoing competition between established manufacturers and innovative newcomers will likely shape the UK automotive landscape throughout 2026 and beyond.
