In modern electric vehicles, hundreds of lithium-ion cells work together as a single battery system. For the battery to function effectively, these cells must maintain closely balanced voltages. However, differences in temperature and charging patterns can cause some cells to degrade faster than others over time. When one cell weakens, it forces the battery management system (BMS) to limit the entire pack’s performance to protect the weakest cell. This limitation can lead to reduced driving range and charging difficulties.
Detecting such voltage imbalances early is crucial because it helps prevent costly repairs or replacements. Typically, replacing a damaged battery module can cost thousands of dollars, making accurate diagnostics valuable for both sellers and buyers in the used EV market. By identifying early signs of cell degradation, Generational’s technology enables more precise valuations and reduces financial risks associated with used electric vehicles.
The importance of transparent battery health data is growing as the market for used EVs expands. A recent study known as the 2025 Battery Performance Index analyzed over 8,000 EVs in the UK and found that while average battery health remains high at 95.15%, older vehicles show increasing variability in performance. Two batteries with similar overall SoH percentages may behave very differently if one has significant cell-level voltage imbalance, highlighting the need for more detailed diagnostic tools.

This capability helps address consumer concerns about battery reliability and supports dealers in setting more confident asking prices.
