At the 2026 New York International Auto Show, the Hyundai Ioniq 6 N was awarded the prestigious World Performance Car of the Year title. This marks the second time in three years that a Hyundai N-branded electric vehicle has won this award, following the Ioniq 5 N’s victory in 2024. The competition was fierce, with twenty cars initially considered before narrowing down to three finalists: the Hyundai Ioniq 6 N, BMW M2 CS, and Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray. Ultimately, Hyundai’s electric sedan took the top honor.
The Ioniq 6 N impresses with its powerful performance. In standard mode, it delivers 601 horsepower and 546 lb-ft of torque using twin electric motors and all-wheel drive. When activated, the N Grin Boost feature provides a temporary power increase to 641 horsepower and 568 lb-ft of torque for ten seconds. This allows the car to accelerate from zero to 62 mph in just 3.2 seconds and reach a top speed of 160 mph. Its 84 kWh battery supports fast charging, going from 10% to 80% in about 18 minutes using a 350 kW charger.
Hyundai also introduced innovative features to enhance the driving experience of this electric vehicle. The N e-Shift system simulates gear shifts through throttle and brake inputs, giving drivers a more engaging feel similar to traditional manual transmissions. Additionally, the N Active Sound+ system generates synthetic engine sounds to enrich the auditory experience.
The BMW M2 CS was a strong contender in this competition. Powered by a 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six engine producing 523 horsepower, it is rear-wheel drive only and uses an eight-speed automatic transmission. It can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds and reaches a top speed of 188 mph. The M2 CS is lighter than the standard M2 by 97 pounds due to extensive use of carbon fiber in key areas like the roof and trunk lid. It also benefits from reworked suspension components and sits slightly lower for improved handling.
Despite BMW’s strong showing and its win in the overall World Car of the Year category with the iX3 model, Hyundai’s Ioniq 6 N edged out its rivals with superior power, quicker acceleration, and competitive pricing. This victory further establishes Hyundai’s growing reputation for producing high-performance electric vehicles that challenge traditional sports cars.
