In the Netherlands, a significant milestone was reached in the advancement of electric heavy-duty truck charging infrastructure. Windrose Electric and Autel Europe completed a successful real-world charging session using the Megawatt Charging System (MCS) standard at the Mega Charging Hub in Roosendaal. This event marks a key validation of megawatt-level charging capability under live operating conditions, crucial for the future of zero-emission freight transport.
The charging setup combined three MaxiCharger DS480 high-power cabinets working in parallel to deliver a total capacity of 1,440 kilowatts. This system was paired with the MaxiCharger DT1500 dispenser, capable of providing up to 1.2 megawatts of power through the MCS interface, with a maximum current of 1,500 amps. The technology also supports CCS charging at up to 650 amps continuous output. Designed for heavy-duty trucks, this infrastructure incorporates liquid-cooled cables and a stable communication framework to handle sustained high-current operations safely and efficiently.
As electric trucks demand more powerful and faster charging solutions, several engineering challenges must be addressed. These include effective thermal management, ensuring vehicle and charger interoperability, adopting communication standards like ISO 15118-20, and integrating systems smoothly on site. The successful demonstration between Windrose’s electric trucks and Autel’s chargers confirmed reliable interoperability and operational stability under real-world conditions.
Wen Han, CEO of Windrose Electric, emphasized that megawatt charging will be essential for next-generation long-haul electric trucks, enabling scalable ultra-fast charging that supports zero-emission freight transport. Andreas Lastei, Vice President of Autel Smart Energy Europe, highlighted the importance of coordinated system design across power conversion, thermal management, communication stability, and site integration. He noted that collaboration with vehicle manufacturers like Windrose is critical to validate and align infrastructure with the actual needs of heavy-duty vehicles.
Following this success in Europe, Windrose and Autel plan to expand their collaboration internationally. Besides further megawatt-level projects across Europe, they are also advancing heavy-duty electric truck charging deployments in Australia. This ongoing partnership demonstrates a shared commitment to accelerating the adoption of zero-emission freight solutions worldwide by aligning vehicle technology with scalable charging infrastructure.
