Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the 2027 GLS-Class, a luxury SUV that pushes the boundaries of design, technology, and performance in the premium three-row segment. The updated GLS features a fresh exterior look, a tech-focused interior, and advanced powertrain options aimed at delivering a refined and versatile driving experience.
The new GLS adopts the latest Mercedes family styling cues with an imposing grille framed in chrome and signature contour lighting. Its headlights and taillights have been redesigned to include star motifs and new Digital Light technology using micro-LEDs, which improve energy efficiency and offer a broader lighting field. For U.S. models, a partial high-beam function is introduced to prevent dazzling other drivers. The exterior palette now includes Dark Petrol and Manufaktur Patagonia Red Metallic colors, complemented by new 21- and 22-inch wheel designs. A panoramic roof spanning over 10.8 square feet is standard across all models, enhancing the sense of openness inside.
Inside, the GLS presents a completely revamped dashboard that replaces the previous layout dominated by large ventilation outlets with a cleaner design that integrates the pillar-to-pillar MBUX Superscreen. This system combines three 12.3-inch displays under one glass panel, including a screen for front passengers. Powered by a new AI-driven supercomputer running MB.OS, the interface supports over-the-air updates and features advanced functions such as augmented reality navigation and multiple virtual assistant avatars. Rear-seat passengers can opt for an entertainment system featuring dual 11.6-inch HD screens for personalized media consumption.
Material choices and interior details have been enhanced with new upholstery colors like Beech Brown and wood trims including Natural Grain Dark Brown Birch Wood and Brown Walnut Wood. Seating capacity remains flexible with six or seven seats, all offering power adjustments to maximize comfort. Additional updates include a vibration function in front seats on certain trims, an electric cabin air filter, and a redesigned multifunction steering wheel with rocker and roller switches.
Performance-wise, the GLS offers two main powertrains: a revised 3.0-liter six-cylinder turbocharged engine in the GLS 450 producing 375 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque, and an all-new 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 with a flat-plane crankshaft in the GLS 580 delivering 530 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque. Both come equipped with Mercedes’ 4Matic all-wheel-drive system featuring a new transfer case for improved traction on loose surfaces. The Airmatic air suspension is standard, tuned for better handling while maintaining comfort. The GLS 580 optionally offers E-Active Body Control, an advanced suspension system that actively levels the vehicle using multiple sensors and processors.
Safety and driver assistance have also been upgraded with ten cameras, five radars, and twelve ultrasonic sensors supporting next-generation features such as City Pro, which enables point-to-point driving in dense urban traffic through future software updates. Enhanced sound insulation materials help reduce engine noise inside the cabin, contributing to a quieter ride.
Expected to reach U.S. dealerships in the latter half of 2026, pricing details have yet to be announced but are anticipated to approach six figures given the extensive upgrades over the previous model starting at $90,250. With growing competition from rivals like Audi’s upcoming Q9 and BMW’s planned Escalade competitor, the refreshed GLS aims to reinforce Mercedes-Benz’s position as a leader in the ultra-luxury SUV market.
