Volkswagen has introduced the redesigned 2027 Atlas, a three-row midsize SUV that builds on the success of its predecessor with updated styling, improved technology, and enhanced comfort. The new Atlas maintains its roomy interior and family-friendly design while offering a more premium look and feel both inside and out.
The 2027 Atlas rides on an evolved version of Volkswagen’s MQB platform, sharing its wheelbase with the previous model but featuring a longer front end designed for better pedestrian safety. Its exterior updates include a bold, blacked-out grille with light-up VW logos and modern LED lighting elements, including animated light bars that activate when approaching or leaving the vehicle. Available wheel sizes range from 18 to 21 inches depending on the trim.
Under the hood, Volkswagen has upgraded the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine to deliver 282 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. Inside, the Atlas receives a complete redesign focused on comfort and convenience. The cabin now includes higher-quality materials like real wood accents and available Nappa leather seats with massage functions on higher trims. A larger infotainment screen measuring up to 15 inches replaces older displays, complemented by multiple USB-C ports and dual wireless charging pads for smartphones. Ambient lighting with up to 30 color options enhances the cabin’s upscale atmosphere. However, most climate controls are integrated into touch-sensitive screens rather than physical buttons, which some drivers may find less intuitive.
Safety features have also been enhanced with Volkswagen’s IQ.DRIVE system now standard across all trims. This suite includes lane-centering assistance with driver-initiated lane changes and an emergency safe pull-over feature that activates if the driver is incapacitated. Additionally, a new front center airbag improves occupant protection in side-impact collisions.
Volkswagen plans to release the 2027 Atlas in fall 2026, with pricing expected to start slightly above $40,000, making it competitive within its segment. A hybrid version is anticipated but will likely debut during a midcycle refresh around the 2029 model year. Built in Chattanooga, Tennessee, the new Atlas aims to retain its appeal to families by combining spaciousness, practicality, and modern technology in a refined package that keeps pace with rival SUVs like the Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade.
