Australia is set to expand its electric truck charging infrastructure with a new $61 million project aimed at supporting the country’s freight sector transition to cleaner energy. The initiative will see the construction of three major charging hubs in Melbourne, each capable of servicing up to 100 electric trucks. This development marks a significant step in reducing emissions from heavy freight vehicles and enhancing the resilience of Australia’s transport network.
The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) has committed $25.3 million to the project, which is being developed by NewVolt. The three hubs will be strategically located in Melbourne’s western, northern, and southeastern regions, providing 24 fast-charging bays for both heavy and medium-sized electric trucks. Transport Minister Catherine King announced the plan at the Freight Forward Summit, emphasizing the importance of these hubs for the future of freight transportation.
Heavy trucks, such as diesel prime movers, have historically been difficult to electrify due to their high initial costs and limited charging infrastructure. ARENA’s chief executive, Darren Miller, noted that establishing these charging stations could remove major barriers to adopting electric trucks. He highlighted that powering trucks with Australian electricity would not only cut emissions but also protect the freight industry from volatile international oil prices.
NewVolt’s chief executive Anthony Headlam revealed that the first charging hub in Melbourne’s west is expected to open later in 2026. The company plans to extend its network further along the Hume Highway toward Sydney, reinforcing its mission to accelerate the adoption of electric trucks in Australia’s freight industry.
This announcement coincides with a milestone achievement where New Energy Transport and ANC completed Australia’s first end-to-end electric truck delivery. Their Windrose electric prime mover transported bulk toilet paper from Sydney to Canberra on a single charge before ANC’s electric delivery trucks took over for last-mile distribution. This operation demonstrated an 84 percent reduction in energy costs and maintained high speeds throughout the journey, underscoring the practical benefits and urgency of electrifying road freight.
