Bentley Confirms 2027 Launch of First All-Electric Luxury SUV Amid Shifts in EV Market

Bentley will proceed with the launch of its first all-electric model next year, a smaller sibling to its best-selling Bentayga SUV, despite other luxury automakers reconsidering electrification plans. The announcement was made by Bentley CEO Frank-Steffen Walliser, who emphasized that the Luxury Urban SUV will remain fully electric, with no hybrid option planned.

Walliser told The Independent that Bentley’s strategy focuses on attracting new customers rather than converting existing ones. “Bentayga will continue, so we don’t have to force people to change from a combustion engine or plug-in hybrid to an electric car,” he explained. “We are targeting and looking for new customers that are in addition to our business.”

He also highlighted the vehicle’s technical capabilities, noting a targeted charging speed of approximately 100 miles in seven minutes. “We are creating a segment and a type of car that only Bentley can deliver,” Walliser said, adding that a plug-in hybrid drivetrain is not feasible or aligned with the company’s strategy.

Despite pushing forward with its electric plans, Walliser acknowledged a renewed interest in internal combustion engines (ICE). “We have maintained a balanced portfolio over the last two years, depending on markets and customer needs, between electric cars, plug-in hybrids, and Supersports,” he said. Development of Bentley’s plug-in hybrid models, including updates to engines, gearboxes, electric motors, chassis, and batteries, will continue, although no new models are expected until the end of the decade.

Bentley’s recent financial results demonstrate resilience amid a challenging market. The British luxury brand reported a seventh consecutive year of profitability, with revenue reaching €2.6 billion in 2025, down just one percent despite a five percent drop in customer deliveries. The company attributed the minor revenue decline to a strategic focus on higher-value models and personalization rather than sheer sales volume.

Demand for Bentley’s most exclusive models, particularly those produced by the Mulliner bespoke division, remains strong, supporting profitability despite lower overall volumes. The Bentayga continues to be Bentley’s global bestseller, with the recently introduced Bentayga Speed maintaining robust performance in key markets.

“2025 was a pivotal year for Bentley as we prepare the next generation of vehicles, including our upcoming all-electric model,” Walliser said, underscoring the company’s commitment to electrification while maintaining its traditional luxury offerings.
