Ford Motor Company has scaled back several of its high-profile electric vehicle (EV) initiatives, delaying battery plant investments and reconsidering parts of its product pipeline. However, the automaker is continuing to push forward with what it considers a cornerstone of its long-term EV strategy: a new low-cost electric vehicle platform designed to support a lineup of more affordable models.
The shift in priorities, first outlined in December, has created some uncertainty among investors. While Ford has postponed or canceled certain EV programs, it has not abandoned its broader electrification ambitions. Instead, the company appears to be focusing on cost efficiency and scalability as it navigates a more cautious EV market environment.
At the center of this strategy is Ford’s newly developed “Universal EV Platform,” engineered to underpin a variety of future electric vehicles with starting prices around $30,000. The platform is designed for flexible use across multiple body styles—including pickups, SUVs, and sedans—while simplifying manufacturing processes to reduce production costs and improve economies of scale.
The first vehicle built on this platform will be a midsize electric pickup truck, expected to debut in 2027. According to Ford, the truck will feature a streamlined design aimed at improving aerodynamics and maximizing driving range while keeping battery size—and cost—relatively low.
Ford has indicated that the pickup will offer more than 300 miles of range and include two rows of seating, targeting both practicality and affordability. It will be powered by lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery cells produced in Michigan. While LFP batteries typically have lower energy density compared to conventional lithium-ion batteries, they are more cost-effective and offer longer lifespans, aligning with Ford’s focus on reducing upfront costs.
To support the new platform, Ford is investing approximately $5 billion. This includes around $3 billion for a battery production facility in Michigan and $2 billion to upgrade an assembly plant in Kentucky to manufacture the new generation of EVs.
Ford has confirmed that the upcoming pickup is only the first in a broader lineup of affordable electric models based on the Universal EV Platform. Details on future vehicles remain limited, as the company continues to assess market demand and evolving conditions in the U.S. EV sector.
Importantly, the new model will not replace existing products such as the Ranger or Maverick, nor will it serve as the successor to the F-150 Lightning. Ford has signaled that the next-generation Lightning will target a more premium segment and may incorporate range-extending technology using a gasoline-powered onboard generator.
With its strong legacy in the pickup segment, Ford is positioning this new electric truck as a key entry point into the mass-market EV space. If successful, it could establish a foundation for a new wave of competitively priced electric vehicles and reshape the company’s role in the evolving automotive landscape.
