Lucid Unveils Plans for Affordable EVs, Robotaxis, and Midsize Platform to Expand Beyond Luxury Cars

by Shreeya

Lucid Motors made a major splash at its recent investor day, revealing ambitious plans that go beyond its high-end luxury vehicles. The automaker confirmed the launch of autonomy subscriptions, a robotaxi program, and support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. However, the biggest announcement centered on its new midsize platform and the vehicles it will underpin.

The upcoming platform will support multiple models, with the first two named Cosmos and Earth, positioned below the current Air and Gravity in both lineup and pricing. A third model, yet unnamed, is expected to follow later.

Lucid emphasizes that the new platform will retain the brand’s core philosophy: high efficiency, strong performance, and spacious interiors. At the same time, it focuses on reducing costs. Engineers redesigned the architecture to use fewer components, smaller battery packs, and simplified manufacturing processes, aiming to lower production costs while preserving range and performance.

Introducing the Atlas Electric Drive Unit

A key innovation is the Atlas Electric Drive Unit, a smaller, lighter, and more cost-efficient motor compared with the Air and Gravity. Lucid says the design uses over 30% fewer parts and has significantly lower material costs, contributing to more affordable future vehicles.

Battery efficiency also plays a major role in cost savings. The midsize vehicles are engineered to achieve competitive range using smaller battery packs, one of the most expensive elements of any EV. This approach could reduce the overall price by thousands of dollars per vehicle.

Positioning, Pricing, and Market Strategy

Lucid says the Cosmos and Earth are designed to appeal to adventure-minded drivers. In a company presentation, Lucid plotted its three upcoming midsize models on a “sporty to functional” and “advanced to traditional” graph. The Cosmos is positioned as the performance-focused, sporty model with a claimed 0-60 mph acceleration of 3.5 seconds or less. The Earth leans toward functionality while maintaining advanced features. The third model, still unnamed, is expected to be the most practical and sizable of the three.

Pricing is expected to start under $50,000, although exact launch dates have not been disclosed. Following Lucid’s past strategy with the Gravity and Air, higher-end trims may arrive first, with lower-cost versions coming later.

A Platform for Growth and Autonomy

Beyond consumer sales, the new platform plays a pivotal role in Lucid’s long-term ambitions. It underpins the company’s robotaxi initiative and autonomy plans, including monthly subscription services, which Lucid sees as a key revenue opportunity. By moving into lower price segments and standardizing components across multiple models, the company anticipates increased production volumes, lower costs, and healthier margins—something its low-volume luxury lineup has struggled to achieve.

If successful, Lucid’s lineup could transform dramatically. The automaker would expand from a limited luxury sedan and SUV portfolio to a full spectrum of EVs, ranging from high-end models to more affordable options, alongside autonomous vehicles built for ride-hailing services.
