Each year, prostate cancer claims the lives of more than 17,000 men in the UK. The good news is that a simple, non-invasive blood test can detect the disease early when treatment is most effective.
The Bridgnorth Lions Club is hosting its annual prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing event at Castle Hall on Wednesday, September 24. Nearly 700 men have already pre-booked their appointments, with organizers expecting attendance to exceed 1,000.
A Lions spokesperson explained, “Men can book their tests online through the Bridgnorth Lions website or by searching ‘mypsatests.org.uk.’ Every participant is assigned a specific time slot to streamline the process. Walk-ins will not be accepted this year due to the fully computerized system handling testing, lab work, and results notification.”
The PSA test costs £23, subsidized by the Lions, who cover the remaining cost of about £28 per person. This fee includes nursing staff, medical equipment, and laboratory analysis. While the PSA test is approximately 75% accurate, high or low results are not definitive diagnoses but important indicators for further medical consultation.
The Lions recommend that men over 40 years old get screened annually, regardless of symptoms, since prostate cancer remains one of the leading causes of death among men. “Early detection is vital. Men owe it to themselves and their families to know their status,” the spokesperson added.
Since 2009, the Bridgnorth Lions have provided these screenings, contributing to the survival of an estimated 400 local men through early detection and timely medical follow-up.
In addition to PSA testing, cholesterol and diabetes screenings will be available for both men and women. Attendees can also benefit from free hearing health assessments provided by Second Sense.
The event has grown into a social occasion where participants often enjoy refreshments together, combining health awareness with community spirit.
