Health officials have begun vaccinating people in southern Congo after a new Ebola outbreak left at least 16 people dead, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
The campaign, which started in Kasai province, is targeting frontline health workers and individuals who may have been exposed to the virus. Ebola spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids and can be fatal if untreated.
Limited Vaccine Supply
The WHO said an initial batch of 400 doses of the Ervebo vaccine has been deployed, with more shipments expected in the coming weeks. The International Coordinating Group on Vaccine Provision has already approved an additional 45,000 doses to supplement Congo’s existing stockpile of 2,000.
Efforts on the ground have been slowed by poor infrastructure, limited funding, and restricted access to affected communities.
Ongoing Health and Security Challenges
The outbreak in Kasai is Congo’s 16th Ebola flare-up since the virus was first identified in 1976. This strain is linked to the Zaire species of the virus, one of the most deadly.
Congo continues to face major challenges in fighting outbreaks, including long-running conflicts with armed groups in the eastern region that have weakened the country’s health system.
The Bigger Picture
While vaccines are a powerful tool in controlling Ebola, experts say community engagement, early detection, and strong health systems remain critical. For many Congolese families, the outbreak adds to ongoing struggles with access to medical care and mental health support, including psychiatric care for trauma related to both conflict and infectious disease outbreaks.
