General Motors is reportedly preparing a significant overhaul for its next-generation Chevrolet Silverado 1500, with new engine options and upgraded technology expected to debut in the upcoming model. According to sources cited by The Fast Lane, the redesigned pickup—alongside its GMC Sierra 1500 counterpart—could arrive with an all-new lineup of small-block V8 engines.
One of the key changes under discussion is the replacement of the current 5.3-liter V8 with a larger 5.7-liter unit. In addition, a more powerful option is rumored to grow from the existing 6.2 liters to approximately 6.6 liters, though some inconsistencies in reported specifications remain. Despite this, insiders suggest GM is targeting output figures of around 400 horsepower for the smaller V8 and up to 475 horsepower for the larger variant.
If accurate, these figures would mark a notable improvement over the current Silverado and Sierra models, which deliver 355 horsepower and 420 horsepower respectively. The reported performance targets are said to have been shared during a recent dealer meeting in Las Vegas.
Beyond powertrain upgrades, the next-generation Silverado is also expected to feature a range of enhancements aimed at improving comfort and in-cabin technology. These may include a larger infotainment display, available massaging seats on higher trims, and the latest iteration of GM’s Super Cruise hands-free driving system.
Design patent filings for the new Silverado hint at a more robust and sophisticated exterior, suggesting the truck will evolve significantly from its predecessor. Under the hood, the upcoming sixth-generation small-block V8 engines are expected to introduce dual-injection technology, a system that combines direct and port fuel injection for improved efficiency and performance.
This setup, already previewed in high-performance applications such as the Corvette ZR1, allows direct injectors to deliver fuel into the combustion chamber while port injectors enhance the air-fuel mixture in the intake. The additional injectors are particularly useful under high-load conditions, ensuring optimal combustion when demand peaks. A dedicated control module manages the coordination between the two systems.
In addition to the new V8s, GM is also expected to refine its existing 2.7-liter turbocharged inline-four engine, potentially increasing its output for the next-generation trucks. Transmission details remain unclear, though both current configurations and the 10-speed automatic used with V8 models are likely candidates.
Looking further up the range, heavy-duty versions of the Silverado and Sierra may also see major changes. Reports suggest a new “Megamax” turbo-diesel engine could be introduced, featuring an 8.3-liter displacement and output exceeding 600 horsepower. If realized, this would represent a substantial leap over current diesel offerings, including GM’s Duramax, Ford’s Power Stroke, and Ram’s Cummins engines.
While many of these details remain unconfirmed, the next-generation Silverado 1500 is shaping up to be a major step forward for GM’s full-size pickup lineup, combining increased performance with advanced technology and refinement.
