Volvo is expanding its electrified lineup with the upcoming launch of the new XC70 in Europe later this year. Positioned between the XC60 and XC90 in the brand’s SUV portfolio, the model is designed to strengthen Volvo’s presence in the premium plug-in hybrid segment while challenging established rivals such as Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz.
While Volvo’s fully electric models like the EX60 are gaining traction, the automaker acknowledges that demand for plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) remains strong, particularly in the premium SUV category. The XC70 is expected to play a strategic role in meeting that demand by offering long electric range combined with the flexibility of a combustion engine.
The European XC70 will be based on the version introduced in China in 2025 and will be offered with two plug-in hybrid powertrain options. Both configurations pair a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine producing 154 horsepower with an electric motor. The systems deliver combined outputs of either 313 horsepower or a more powerful 455 horsepower.
Battery capacity will vary depending on the version. The entry model will feature a 21.2 kWh battery pack, while the higher-spec variant will use a larger 39.6 kWh battery. With the larger battery, Volvo estimates an electric-only driving range of up to 200 kilometers, placing the XC70 among the longest-range PHEVs available in Europe. This figure also aligns with the capabilities of its technology relative, the Lynk & Co 08.
Charging performance is expected to be another highlight. The base battery can charge from 0 to 80 percent in approximately 39 minutes, while the larger battery can reach the same level in just 23 minutes, indicating support for fast charging of at least 50 kW. European versions will also be equipped with an 11 kW onboard charger for AC charging, an upgrade compared to the Chinese model, which is limited to 7 kW.
Inside, the XC70 adopts Volvo’s latest interior design philosophy seen in its newer electric and electrified vehicles. The cabin features a minimalist layout with a vertically oriented infotainment display and a modern digital instrument cluster. The design language is closer to the upcoming EX60 than to the current XC90 plug-in hybrid.
In terms of size, the XC70 measures about 4.82 meters in length and offers a five-seat configuration. Cargo capacity and cabin space are expected to align with typical offerings in the D-segment SUV category.
Volvo has yet to reveal official pricing, but based on the positioning of the Chinese model and the brand’s strategy in Europe, the XC70 is expected to be priced between €65,000 and €70,000. The new SUV will be a central part of Volvo’s European plan to expand its premium plug-in hybrid offerings, focusing on long electric range and fast charging capabilities—an area where some German competitors have been more cautious in their approach.
