Mercedes-Benz is widely recognized in the United States for its luxury passenger cars, but the German automaker’s global lineup extends well beyond sedans and SUVs. The company also produces a broad range of vans, trucks, and commercial vehicles. Over the past two decades, Mercedes-Benz has steadily expanded its van presence in the U.S., making the market a logical destination for its latest electric people mover—the all-new VLE.
The VLE is a fully electric van built on a new platform known as the Mercedes-Benz Van Architecture. This dedicated EV structure features an 800-volt electrical system paired with a 115 kWh battery pack. Buyers will be able to choose between two powertrain configurations: a front-mounted single-motor setup producing 272 horsepower, or a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system delivering 409 horsepower.
According to Mercedes-Benz, the all-wheel-drive version can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 6.4 seconds, a notable figure for a vehicle in the van segment. The platform also supports ultra-fast charging, with peak charging speeds exceeding 300 kW. Under the European WLTP testing cycle, the VLE is expected to deliver a driving range of more than 435 miles. However, the official EPA range for the U.S. market will likely be lower due to stricter testing standards.
As a multi-purpose vehicle, the VLE is designed to accommodate a wide range of customers. Mercedes envisions the van serving both private buyers—such as large families—and businesses that transport premium clients in urban environments. The cabin can seat up to eight passengers and offers three seating configurations. Options range from traditional bench seats to the brand’s “Grand Comfort Seat,” which includes a pillow, calf support, and a built-in massage function. When equipped with these premium seats, the VLE could become the closest alternative in the U.S. market to ultra-luxury vans like the Lexus LM, which have gained popularity in several global markets.
Technology inside the VLE mirrors many features found in Mercedes-Benz passenger cars. The van includes the MB.Drive suite of advanced driver-assistance systems and a dashboard dominated by the brand’s wide “Superscreen” display layout powered by the latest MBUX infotainment platform. Rear passengers can also enjoy a 31.3-inch panoramic screen mounted in the headliner, designed for entertainment and other digital functions during travel.
Flexibility remains a key design priority. Depending on the cabin configuration, seats can be repositioned throughout the interior either manually using wheel-mounted rails or electronically through motorized controls, allowing owners to adapt the space for passengers, cargo, or a combination of both.
While the VLE focuses on delivering premium comfort and versatility, it will not represent the most luxurious van in Mercedes-Benz’s upcoming lineup. The company has previously previewed an even more opulent concept known as the Vision V. Production versions of that flagship model are expected to carry the name VLS, positioning them as the van equivalent of the S-Class.
Mercedes-Benz has yet to reveal full production details for the VLS, meaning buyers will need to wait a bit longer to see how the brand’s most extravagant electric van will look when it reaches the market.
