Coronation Street Star Beverley Callard Opens Up About Pain, Tears and Strength After Breast Cancer Surgery

Beverley Callard, the beloved Coronation Street actress, has shared an emotional update on her breast cancer recovery, revealing the physical and emotional toll she’s currently enduring. The 68-year-old star, who was diagnosed earlier this month, took to social media to give her followers an honest look at her post-surgery struggles.

Just weeks after relocating to Dublin to begin her role on the Irish soap Fair City, Beverley announced her breast cancer diagnosis. In her latest update, the actress confessed to feeling sore, fatigued, and emotionally overwhelmed.

“It’s been a week since my surgery, and I woke up this morning in yesterday’s clothes, too tired and sore to clean up. I haven’t brushed my teeth or combed my hair. I can’t even answer the phone without breaking down in tears,” Beverley shared on her social media account. “I feel absolutely rubbish today. I’m tired, a bit queasy, and have no idea why.”

Despite the physical discomfort, Beverley received a touching gesture from a stranger that helped lift her spirits. She revealed that she had received a heart-shaped cushion and a thoughtful card in the mail, sent by someone she didn’t know. The cushion, which helps alleviate pain under her arm, prompted an emotional response as Beverley expressed her intention to pass it on to someone else once she no longer needed it.

“Once I’m better, I’m going to regift it. I know how much it can help,” she said, her voice filled with emotion.

The actress had previously shared how emotional she became when her dressings were first removed after surgery. On that occasion, Beverley said she refused to let her husband, Jon McEwan, accompany her into the appointment, even though he offered his support.

“I had to do this alone,” she explained. “As I sat in the waiting room, looking around at the women there, I thought, ‘We are so brave.’ Cancer affects everyone, and I knew I had the strength to face it.”

When the dressings were removed, Beverley was confronted with a significant hematoma, a painful swelling caused by clotted blood. Though her consultant recommended waiting before taking any further action, Beverley will have to return to the hospital next week for additional surgery if necessary.

Despite initially feeling strong, the sight of her body post-surgery left Beverley in tears. “When I saw myself for the first time, I thought, ‘I can’t do this.’ It was a tough moment. I didn’t want to look in the mirror, but eventually, I did. I came home and cried in Jon’s arms. It was overwhelming, but we get through these moments.”

Beverley also reminded her followers that, despite the challenging moments, she is determined to stay positive. “If anyone else is going through this, my heart goes out to you. You can do this.”

Earlier this month, Beverley reassured fans that her cancer was caught early, and she is now preparing for further treatments, including radiotherapy. Following her surgery to remove two lymph nodes as a precaution, she is set to return to Norfolk for additional treatment.

Beverley’s openness about her battle with breast cancer has touched many of her fans, who continue to send their support and love during her recovery journey.
